Toronto

Toronto, Ontario, hasbecome Canada's best-knowncity. Once

saddledwith  areputationstodginess,  it has been reborn and

revitalized and now stands asone of North America's leadersat

the arts, entertainment, and business.

Toronto boats a vast multicultural mix, with large groupsof

Italians,Germans,  Portuguese,Ukrainians,Asians,  andWest

Indians, each contributing tothe city's mosaic. Thecosmopoli-

tian blend offers visitorsfine dining from aseemingly endless

rangeofthecultures.  Shopperscanbrowse  through   funky

boutiqueson  QueenStreetWest,  admirethe best of designer

fashions in the renovateddistrict of Yorkville, orvisit Eaton

Centre,a  four-level$25-millionretail  complex. For people-

watchingand  plentyofculinary  delights, there's Kensington

Market,which  featuresfreshproduce,  fish,andplenty  of

friendlyconversation.  Thecity   was  designedand,   since,

renovated to make the most ofits settings on the store ofLake

Ontario. The bestview is fromthe CN Tower,  a 553-metre spire

that is consideredthe world's tallestfree-standing structure.

Nearbyis   Harbourfron,a   lakeside  shopping,   dinningand

entertainment area whose restored warehouse is a centre for  flea

markets, artstudios, andcrafts shops.  Much ofthe appeal of

Toronto lies inits sence ofhistory, which datesback to 1749

when Frenchfur tradersfrom Quebec  established aford on the

site.The  residentshaveworked  toensurethe survival and

revitalization of such areas as St. Lawrence Market (the place to

be on aSaturday when thefarmers bring intheir wares) anda

booming Chinatown, chock-full of restaurants and grocery stores.

Toronto is a cultural bastion, with the ultra-modernO'Keefe

Centre, which  ishometotheCanadian Opera Company and the

National Ballet of Canada; theArt Gallry of Ontario, withmore

than 15,000works -from Old  Masters tocontemporary art - in

its permanent collection; andthe Royal Ontario Museumwith its

vast arrayof artand artifacts  from culturesthe world over.

business and finance from another important element of thecity,

and Toronto'sskyline isdominated by  the high-risetowers of

financial institutions. Among the most notable is the RoyalBank

Tower, with its distinctive gold-embedded windowpanels.

CN Tower

At  553.33metersthe  CNToweris considered the world's

tallest free-standingstructure.   Construction took40 months,

cost $57 million,employed 1,573 workers,and was completedin

June1976.   Aslendercolumn  resemblingagiant needle, it

weight 132,080metric tons- the  equivalent ofroughly 23,214

large elephants.

Visitors canstep inside  one offour glass-faced elevators

andbe  whiskedtothe  SkypodObservationlevel  in under a

minute.In all,  thereare three   observation decks,at  342,

346,and   447meters   aboveground,   the   world's    highest

public     observationgalery.  Eachof these offers panoramic

views of greaterToronto, Toroto Islands, and, on aclear  day,

Niagara Falls and   Buffalo, New york.    Spectacular views   are

alsoto  behadfrom  Top   Of Toronto, arestaurant  atthe

350-metrelevel  that makes   a full revolutiononce every   72

minutes, and   Sparkles, anightclub   at the346-metrelevel.

Those whoprefer to   dine on  the groundlevelcan  enjoy   a

snack   in   the family-stylerestaurant. Thetower is a stroll

away from   the lakefront and a  walking tour   ofHarbourfront

parks and marinas.

As  anyfamousstructure  might, the CN Tower has inspired

legions ofwould-be recordsetters.   It hasthe longest metal

staircase in the world (2,570 steps), which is made availableto

the publiceach yearfor a  charity stairclimb. StuntmanDar

Robinson has jumped from the topof the tower twice - oncewith

a parachutefor thefilming of  the movieHIGHPOINT (1979) and

once using a wire cablefor the TV show "That'sIncredible." On

thetower's  tenthanniversary,"Spider Man" Goodwin completed

two free-style climbs outside the glass elevator-shaft window.

SkyDome

SkyDome is  the world'sgreatest entertainmentcenter. It's

a home to the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Argonauts as wellas

host towide varietyof other  sporting spectaculars, concerts,

family shows and consumeers shows.

Just how big   is Toronto,s SkyDome?   Well, you could    put

eightBoeing  747sonthe   playingfield.Or  allof Eaton

Centre. Ora 32-homesubdivision.   OrtheRoman   Colosseum.

Evenwith  the retractable roofclosed, a 31-stoereybuildings

could fitinside the structure.

    The $500-millionbuildings openedon June  3, 1989,   after

32 monthsof   construction. On   that day,   inclementweather

forced the developers   to prove   that the   multi-panelled roof

could be closed in just20 minutes. Theroof runs on  aseries

of   steel  track   andbogies,  weighs    11,000tons  -   the

equivalent, roughly, of 3,734 automobiles   - and ismade upof

steel tresses covered by corrugated steel cladding.

    The  eight-acrestadiumoffers  sportsfansfive   levels

of seating andtheworld's  largest video   replay screen. More

than 50,000 people at a timecan watch a football or abaseball

game, and there, salso a350-room hotelbuilt into  thenorth

end offacilty, with70 rooms  offering aview ofthe playing

field.

But the building is muchmore than a place towach sporting

events underan openroof. There  are 23fast-food stands,48

beverageoutlets,  a   430-seatrestaurant  for   quick-service

dining, a300-foot-long baroverlooking thefield, the largest

McDonald's in North America, theHard Rock Cafe, and a120-seat

Niagara Falls

Every year morethan 12 millionpeople flock toOntario to

see the breathtacking natural phenomenon knows as NiagaraFalls.

tradition got started. They come tosee the combinedcascading

power of the 54-metre CanadianFalls - knows as HorseshoeFalls

- andthe AmericanFalls, which  soars to56 metres. Together,

these thunderingcataracts rushover the  brink atthe rate of

39.1 million Imperial gallons of water per minute.

Statistic don'tdo justice  to themajesty, thedanger, or

the romance ofthe Falls. Theyhave to be  seen in person, and

there are a variety of waysto view the spectacle once yourget

there:four  Maid-of-Mistboatsenter  the Horseshoe Basin and

pass directly in front of cataracts; the Niagara SpanishAerocar

spans mightly whirlpool wherethe river takes a90-degree turn;

the GreatGorge Adventureprovides a  close viewof the waters

from half a continent plungingthrough the gorge at theriver's
