THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE ENGLISH COURT: FROM HENRY THE EIGHT TO CHARLES THE FIRST In January, we visited the Moscow Kremlin Museums. They hosted a fascinating collection of English Art. The exhibition was called “The Golden Age of the English Court: From Henry VIII to Charles I”. It was organized by the Kremlin Museums and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The masterpieces were lent by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal Collection, National Portrait Gallery of London.
The exhibition demonstrated the most outstanding period in the history of England – the epoch of Tudors and Early Stuarts. These English kings and queens did a lot to develop the English state, culture and arts. In the XVI- XVII th century the royal court became the center of power and culture. The English court life developed together with the political ideas of the centuries.
Most masterpieces of the period were lost in the English Civil War. Those left are really valuable. Among them there are portraits of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Jacob I and Charles I. There are also heraldic symbols, silver tableware, jewellery, tapestry.
