SPORT Basketball (commonly nicknamed "B-ball" or "hoops") is a team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing or "shooting" a ball through the top of a basketball hoop while following a set of rules. Basketball is one of the world's most popular and widely viewed sports. BASKETBALL TENNIS Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a racket to strike a ball over a net into the opponent's court. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including people in wheelchairs. Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a sport played between two teams of eleven players. At the turn of the 21st century, the game was played by over 250 million players in over 200 countries, making it the world's most popular sport. FOOTBALL Hockey is a family of sports in which two teams play against each other by trying to maneuver a ball or a puck into the opponent's goal using a hockey stick. Ice hockey is played on a large flat area of ice, using a puck. This puck is often frozen before high-level games to decrease the amount of bouncing and friction on the ice. HOCKEY Climbing is the activity of using one's hands and feet (or indeed any other part of the body) to ascend a steep object. It is done both for recreation (to reach an inaccessible place, or for its own enjoyment) and professionally, as part of activities such as maintenance of a structure, or military operations. CLIMBING Boxing, also called pugilism, is a combat sport in which two people fight each other using their fists. Boxing is supervised by a referee over a series of between one to three minute intervals called rounds. The match ends, when an opponent is knocked out or deemed incapable to continue match, if an opponent is disqualified for breaking a rule or by judges' scorecards at the end of the bout. There are two forms of boxing, amateur and professional. BOXING Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. VOLLEYBALL Scuba diving is a form of underwater diving in which a diver uses a scuba set to breathe underwater. SCUBA DIVING Sumo is a competitive full-contact sport where a wrestler attempts to force another wrestler out of a circular ring or to touch the ground with anything other than the soles of the feet. SUMO Golf is a ball sport, in which competing players (or golfers) hit balls into a series of holes on a golf course using the fewest number of strikes. It is one of the few ball games that does not require a standardized playing area. Instead, the game is played on golf "courses", each of which features a unique design, courses typically consist of either 9 or 18 holes. GOLF Archery is the art, practice, or skill of propelling arrows with the use of a bow (bow and arrow). Archery has historically been used for hunting and combat. One who practices archery is typically known as an "archer" or "bowman". ARCHERY Skiing is an activity using skis as equipment for traveling over snow. Skis are used in conjunction with boots that connect to the ski with use of a binding. Extreme skiing consists of skiing from the top to the bottom of a prescribed course by the shortest and fastest route possible SKIING An activity or sport of standing on a short wide board and moving very fast down a hill covered with snow SNOWBOARDING Sailing is the propulsion of a vehicle and the control of its movement with large foils called sails. A sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails in order to move the boat and change its direction and speed. Mastery of the skill requires experience in varying wind and sea conditions, as well as knowledge concerning sailboats themselves and a keen understanding of one's surroundings. SAILING Surfing is a sport or activity of standing on a long flat board and moving across waves in the sea SURFING White water rafting is a sport or activity of moving a rubber boat through water and round rocks in a river that is flowing very fast WHITE WATER RAFTING Cycling, also called bicycling or biking, is the use of bicycles for transport, recreation, or for sport. Persons engaged in cycling are cyclists or bicyclists. Apart from ordinary two-wheeled bicycles, cycling also includes riding unicycles, tricycles, quadracycles, and other similar human-powered vehicles CYCLING Horse racing is an equestrian sport that has a long history. Archaeological records indicate that horse racing occurred in ancient Babylon, Syria, and Egypt. Both chariot and mounted horse racing were events in the ancient Greek Olympics by 648 BC. Thoroughbred racing was popular with the aristocrats and royalty of British society, earning it the title "Sport of Kings". HORSE RACING Parachuting, also known as skydiving, is the action of exiting an aircraft and returning to earth with the aid of a parachute. It may or may not involve a certain amount of free-fall, a time during which the parachute has not been deployed and the body gradually accelerates to terminal velocity. PARACHUTING Bungee jumping is an activity of jumping off a high bridge, tied to a long rope. BUNGEE JUMPING Figure skating is an Olympic sport in which individuals, pairs, or groups perform spins, jumps, footwork and other intricate and challenging moves on ice skates. FIGURE SKATING Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of 11 players on an oval-shaped field, at the center of which is a rectangular long pitch. One team bats, trying to score as many runs as possible while the other team bowls and fields, trying to dismiss the batsmen and limit the runs scored by the batting team. A run is scored by the striking batsman hitting the ball with his bat, running to the opposite end of the pitch and touching the crease there without being dismissed. CRICKET Squash is a high-speed racquet sport played by two players (or in doubles 4 players on court at a time) in a four-walled court with a small ball. The game was formerly called squash racquets, a reference to the "squashable" soft ball used in the game. SQUASH BASEBALL Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of nine players each who take turns batting and fielding. The batting team attempts to score runs by hitting a ball that is thrown by the pitcher with a bat swung by the batter, then running counter-clockwise around a series of four bases: first, second, third, and home plate. A run is scored when a player advances around the bases and returns to home plate. SWIMMING POLO Polo is a team sport played on horseback. The objective is to score goals against an opposing team. Each polo team consists of four riders and their mounts. The modern game lasts roughly two hours and is divided into periods called chukkas (occasionally rendered as "chukkers"). Polo is played professionally in 16 countries. It was formerly, but is not currently, an Olympic sport. GYMNASTICS Gymnastics is a sport involving the performance of exercises requiring strength, flexibility, balance and control. Gymnastics evolved from exercises used by the ancient Greeks that included skills for mounting and dismounting a horse, and from circus performance skills. Participants can include children as young as 20 months old doing kindergym and children's gymnastics, recreational gymnasts of ages 5 and up, competitive gymnasts at varying levels of skill, and world class athletes. KARATE Karate is now predominantly a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands, and palm-heel strikes. Historically and in some modern styles grappling, throws, joint locks, restraints, and vital point strikes are also taught. TABLE TENNIS Table tennis, also known as ping pong, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball back and forth across a table using a small, round bat. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. Spinning the ball alters its trajectory and limits an opponent's options, giving the hitter a great advantage. When doing so the hitter has a better chance of scoring if the spin is successful. ATHLETICS The sport of athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that involve competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most commonly competed sports in the world. Athletics is mostly an individual sport, with the exception of relay races and competitions which combine athletes' performances for a team score.
