Hello, friends! I am glad to see you again at the lesson. When people on holiday they usually prefer travelling. Nowadays travelling abroad is very popular among the people. Would you like to have a chance? Why not? Today at the lesson we’ll try to discuss and decide what is necessary to know and do if you’re going to spend your holidays abroad. If you do it, you should find some interesting information about the place you want to visit.
I want you to divide into 3 groups. Each of the groups will be given 5 questions about some countries, cities or places of interest in them. If you don’t know the answer, please,
use the Internet and find the answers.
If I go to … I’ll see/visit … because it is famous for … )
I’m sure, the most comfortable and the quickest way of travelling abroad is going by plane. Do you agree with me? Now listen to the information which is important for everyone who is on board of the plane. Listen to the text twice and do the test after it.
People say “Every Country Has Its Customs”. You’d better to learn a lot about the country you’ve chosen and then decide: trip or not to trip there beforehand. For example, read some interesting and useful information about the USA.
(учащимся предлагаются для чтения 2 текста, ознакомившись с которыми, они должны ответить на вопрос(на экране): What is useful or essential for you to know about the USA?
- it’s essential to know that foreigners have to pay charge for any service they have: in the airport, in a hotel, in a room or in a restaurant.
- it’s useful to know how Americans dress on different occasions or during their working time.
- it’s useful to know how to speak to people when you’re in different parts of America.
4. Travelling abroad is not an easy thing, it needs a lot of preparations beforehand. Now I want you to look through the tables and choose what you should know about it.
Discuss what is popular among the youth and choose which way of “Getting To Know the Country” you prefer.
- first of all, we should plan our visit to the country;
- we should have all necessary documents;
- we should decide how to get there;
- we should contact with the Travel Agency’
- finally, we book and pay for the accommodation, excursions and return tickets.
- we’d like to say that people like to travel by all kinds of transport. The best entertainment is visiting museums, castles, places of interest, parks. They prefer to stay in a single flat or in families and hotels.
- according to the table, we should say that people travel abroad on different kinds of transport: by plane, by ship, by train, by bus or public transport.
- as for our group, we’ve chosen Great Britain for travelling to improve our language, make a lot of friends and learn much about its places of interest.
- and we prefer travelling by air, living in families with cooking facilities and different excursions to museums, castles, parks, outings with an English guide.
5. Thank you, friends, for your active work at the lesson. I hope, it wasn’t boring but useful, and you enjoyed it, too.
6. Your home task for the next lesson will be the following - choose the topic and make up a dialogue:
- A meal on board the plane (a conversation between a passenger and a stewardess);
- Speaking to a neighbor (find the reason to speak to speak to your neighbor about and get acquainted)

What should you know about Americans
№1.At airports, porters get a dollar for carrying one or two suitcases. A hotel door attendant or parking valet also gets about a dollar for getting a taxi or for parking a car. Many people also tip hotel maids, especially when they stay in a hotel for several days. They usually leave a dollar a day.
The charge of the size depends on how pleased the customer is. In restaurants, the bill doesn’t include a service charge: if the group is large, there may be a service charge. There is no tipping in cafeterias or fast food restaurants.
№2.Clothing in America reflects a person’s social position and income, yet, no person is restricted to a certain uniform or manner of dress because of his occupation or class in Friday because of the coming weekend, though on other days they are expected to wear formal office clothes when a tie is a must. Women in offices usually wear skirts, blouses and stockings.
In spite of all the informality, America is not completely without customs that show consciousness of social distinction. One is likely to use somewhat more formal language when talking to a superior, while an informal “Hello” is an acceptable greeting from an employer. Southerners usually say “Yes, sir” or “Yes, ma’am” when talking to an older person or a person in position of authority. “Yes, Mr. Black” or “No, Mr. Black” is more common in a similar situation in the north or in the west.
