He was the eldest of 12 sons of Mary Mylwaye and Edmund Drake. By the 1560s,Drake was given command of his own ship’Judith’.With a small fleet,Drake sailed to Africa and worked illegaly as slave trader. In 1568 Drake and his people became trapped in Mexican port.The incident instilled in Drake a deep hatred of the Spanish crown. In 1572 Drake captured Panama’s town,a drop-off point for Spanish ships bringing silver and gold from Peru. With the success of Panama expedition, Queen Elizabeth I sent Drake out against the Spanish along the Pacific coast of South America in1577. The sailor led the fleet into the Strait of Magellan to reach the Pacific Ocean.Inspite the terrible storms they were sailing up the coasts of Chile and Peru and plundering Spanish merchat ships full of bullion. Drake set sail across the Pacific through the Indian Ocean and around the Cape of Good Hope back to England,landing at Plymouth in1580. He was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world. The treasure he captured made him a wealthy man,and the Queen knighted him in1581. In 1588 Drake was appointed vice admiral of English Navy and he fought with Spanish Armada and won at the Battle of Gravelines. On January 28th 1596 Drake died of a fever near Portobelo in Panama.
