Ход урока
I Организационный момент
Teacher: Good morning, pupils! I am glad to see you! What’s your mood today? Look at the faces and choose the face corresponding to your mood today ( Loving, bored, happy, sad, excited, angry)
Teacher: I have brought an apple today for the lesson. Look at it! Isn’t it wonderful? Try to use your imagination and think what the apple looks like. Does the apple remind the Earth? And now look! I cut the apple into four parts. Three parts of the Earth’s surface is water and only one part is land. Now I take the part representing the land and cut it in half. Look, only one half of the land is habitable. The rest part of the land is deserts, mountains, frozen ice and other places where people can’t live. And now I take the piece that represents the habitable land and cut it into 4 sections. Only one of these parts (of the Earth’s habitable land) is where all the Earth’s food comes from. Now look at the 3 parts of the Earth which represent the water. Less than 1% of the Earth’s water is fresh and drinkable. (I cut a very small piece and show it to my pupils). And most of this water tied up in the atmosphere (clouds) and underground. So you see how important it is to think about our Earth. And today at the lesson we are going to discuss the Earth’s problems and find some solutions for helping it. That’s why the theme of our lesson is “Mother planet is showing us the red warning light – be careful – she is saying. To take care of the planet is to take care of our own house” (The Dalai Lama).
I know that you have prepared the quotations of the famous people about nature. What are they?
P1: “Nature pardons no errors” (R.W .Emerson “Essays”)
P2: “Get place and wealth, if possible with grace”
P3: “We must love one another or die.”
P4: ‘Our remedies oft in ourselves do lie which we ascribe to heaven.”(W. Shakespeare)
P5: “Intelligence is the great polluter”
P6: “What if this present were the world’s last night.”
P7: “We are wealthy and wasteful, but this can’t go on”
II. Фонетическая разминка.
You know that radio reporters should speak clearly. So we’re going to improve our pronunciation. Look at the blackboard and listen to my reading first.
Treat the Earth well, it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. (a Kenyan proverb)
Teacher: Can you guess the meaning of some words?
Treat – here: protect, behave towards it (относится к)
Loan – to lend smth, to give smth for some time (давать взаймы, одалживать)
Read the proverb to yourself, then read it out loud as well as you can.
How can you comment on the proverb or explain it?
I shall read you a poem. Listen to me attentively and repeat after me
I want to live and not to die
I want to laugh and not to cry
I want to feel the summer sun
I want to sing when life is fun
I want to fly into the blue I want to swim as fishes do
I want to stretch out friendly hands
To all the young of other lands
I want to live and not die
I want to laugh and not to cry
I want to mate, No atom bomb
Annihilate,
My shining world!

Б) Активизация лексических единиц в речи.
Teacher: read a small fairy – tale and call ecological problems.
Once upon a time there lived Men and Nature. They lived on the Earth in great harmony. Nature helped Men to hunt, to fish, to grow food and to build many things. The time went on. Once Men built many factories, plants, different cars and machines, electric power stations and many other things. All these things were very dangerous for Nature because of their waste. That’s why Nature felt ill. Since that time the situation has been changing to the worst. Now Nature has different diseases. They all are called Ecological Problems.
Teacher: What are these diseases? Name them.
Pupils’ suggested answers: water pollution, soil contamination, air pollution, global warming, ecosystem destruction, overpopulation, acid rains, the depletion of the ozone layer, green house effect, etc.

The Red book
The first list of the Red Data Book was made in 1949; it was published only in 1966. The scientists examined the living conditions of animals, birds, and insects. They made the list of rare and disappearing living things. It’s the unusual book. Do you know that the pages of this book are red, yellow and green? The colour red is a danger signal. It’s a stop sign. It’s the colour of blood and life. Animals which need immediate help are placed in the red pages .Those which number is reducing are on the yellow pages. Green pages are for animals which are already saved. In our country the book appeared in 1974.

Think of the heading for each paragraph.
Did you know that our planet has a special day? Every year, on the 22nd of April, we celebrate Earth Day. On this day, we remind ourselves and others how precious the Earth is and how important it is to look after it.
Earth Day was the idea of American Senator, Gaylord Nelson. The Senator was a sensitive man who couldn’t bear watching our planet suffer. Rivers and seas were getting dirty, many of our plants and animals were becoming extinct and not many people knew about it. Therefore, he decided to take action and create a special day to remind everyone that we need to take care of the earth.
The Senator started by writing letters to colleges, to inform students and teachers about his campaign. He also wrote an article for Scholastic Magazines presenting his idea about the special day he was planning. He hoped that young people around the country would react positively. Fortunately, they did!
As a result, on April 22, 1970, 20 million people across America celebrated the first Earth Day. People all over the country made promises to respect and look after the environment. Since then, Earth Day has been celebrated all over the planet.
88201575628500Today, on Earth Day people organize fund-raising events, such as concerts, contests, parades, festivals, tree-planting excursions and clean-up campaigns. Children design and make objects at school such as bird feeders and earth day wreaths and all of us promise to try to turn every day into Earth Day!

A world wide celebration.
Working for the future.
Optional: Give a short summary of the text. Say how and when Earth Day started, what people do on that day and it is important to celebrate such a day.
VII. Развитие речевых умений.
Teacher: Look through the text from the previous exercise once again. There are several ways to help improve the situation. So, what are they? Divide into groups. Every group will represent an ecological organization. Think of the name, the slogan and the plan of steps your organization will take to save our planet. And in some minutes you are to present your organizations. Look at the blackboard, there are some tips given.
We should…
Invent new types of cars, find out ways to make cool burn more clearly;
Attract more public attention to environmental problems;
Put litter in the big, plant trees and flowers;
Clean streets and yards regularly, use less packaging, build recycling factories and recycle wastes;
3”R”s are the solutions, REDUCE, RECYCLE, REUSE:
REDUCE – human activities causing pollution of water bodies, air, forest, soil;
RECYCLE – all wasted natural resources to reduce their consumption;
REUSE – all recycled materials to reduce the demand;
Educate people.
Teacher: Which environmental group is the most famous in the world?
P1: It’s Greenpeace, which campaigns in many countries around the world.
Teacher: What issues does it campaign?
P2: They have campaigned against hunting whales, pollution in the North Sea, nuclear power, testing nuclear weapons and many other issues.
Teacher: Besides ‘Green Peace” there are other groups such as “Friends of the Earth”, “ The National Trust”, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. They have special environmental education.
Teacher: What environmental groups are there in Russia?
P1: “Travels for Peace and Nature” is the name of the public movement that appeared in Russia some years ago. They led campaigns against global warming, greenhouse effect and many other issues.
Teacher: Thanks. In fact, Russia is cooperating in the field of the environmental protection with the United States, Canada, Norway, Finland and many other countries. For example, Russia and the United States are carrying out joint projects to study the ecosystems of the Arctic and Subarctic regions.

VIII Рефлексия.
Teacher: I have found a Native American poem. I want you to read it aloud and answer the question of the poem: Will the white man understand it’s too late to save the Earth. What has our lesson taught you?
Teacher: What must people do to protect nature from pollution, to keep the Earth clean and people healthy? Give me your ideas about it, please!
Only when all the rivers have run dry
And all the fish in the sea have died
Only when all the rainforests have been burnt down
And there is no food for the animals
Only when all the blue skies have been filled with smoke
And the cities of the world have choked
Will the white man understand that it’s too late to save the earth.Pupils give their points of view.
P1: Take care of nature.
P2: Feed birds and help them.
P3: Put litter away.
P4:Don’t frighten animals.
P5:Don’t pick wild flowers, plants from Red Data Book.
P6: Recycle used materials.
P7: Clean rivers and springs.
P8: Keep our school, schoolyard clean.
P9: Make the environmental programs in our school.
P10: Remember the wise advice of a great English writer John Galsworthy who said: “If you don’t think about the Future, you will not have it”.
IX Домашнее задание.
Your home task for the next time will be to write a letter for an internet forum. In your letter you shoud appeal to people with a call to stop polluting our planet/
X. Заключительный этап ( Оценки. Комментарии)
Thank you for the lesson. It was a great pleasure to discuss ecological problems with you. Think globally, act locally! Save our environment! Our solutions will help you.Dear children! I’m sure you are real friends of our planet. And I hope our lesson helps us to be more active in the ecological movement. In fact we live only once and not a very long life. We have one Earth for all those who love it and who do not.
Now I want you to sing the song.
Ученики поют песню Луй Армстронг «What a wonderful world»
Текст песни:
I see trees of green, red roses too I watch them bloom for me and you And I think to myself, what a wonderful world The colours of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky Are also on the faces of the people going by I see friends shaking hands, saying, "How do you do?" They're really saying, "I love you" I hear babies cry, I watch them grow They'll learn much more, than I'll ever know And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.
