Decades ago, human cloning was simply an idea that one would expect to find in some fictitious story about the future. It is incredible to think that now it is not only an idea but a reality. What is cloning and clones? Ever since the belief that cloning was a possibility, it has been a major conflict in the ethical world of values. There are many different pros and cons about the subject, and for a majority, deciding what is right and wrong. What is cloning and clones? A clone is an organism, or group of organisms, derived another organism in a nonsexual way. Each cloned organism, or group of organisms, is composed with the exact genetic material as the original organism(s). What is cloning and clones? Genetic material is made up of genes, the parts of a cell that determine characteristics in living things. Three strong pros that are commonly used in the great debate over cloning include: Cloning is a technology that would allow infertile couples to have a genetically related, child. Cloned human embryonic stem cells have the potential to cure, or assist in the discovery of a cure, for just about any disease or disorder you can imagine, not to mention save diminishing species of animals. Human cloning is not wrong, immoral or evil Pros for cloning Cloning of organs allow organ transplant at any time (no need to find donors) Cloning specific organs or tissues allow us to study their function without having to experiment on a live person. Burn - ожог Pros for cloning Cloning of tissues allow recovery of those with burns Cloning of spinal cord may enable those with spinal cord injuries to be able to walk again Pros for cloning Techniques for cloning can be applied to other areas of biological research, for example, genetics research. If we have the technology to clone things, we can apply the technology to learn much more about biology than we currently know Pros for cloning People are reaching old age quickly and dying from disease. Cloning could prevent this. Our lives have become expendable because there is not enough time to do the stuff we want. Pros for cloning Cloning will enable us to live longer, thus improving quality of our lives to the point where we're not recycling people like we do our paper. Pros for cloning Cloning people in countries where there is a decreasing population can allow the working force to increase, thus improve the productivity of the country and strength of its economy Cons Cons Cloning can have very serious health risks. If a child was a clone, he/she might grow up lacking a sense of individuality. Cons “…If, in order to have a baby, you need two parents, information is needed from both parents, which challenges the beliefs of some of the benefits of cloning…” (Washington post.) Cons If such a thing were to happen people would loose the desire (and maybe even the need), for relationships, love, and emotions… the things that connect us all to each other on a spiritual level. Cloning is not ethical An argument against that: What is ethics to start with? Are you the one to define it? We can always clone organs and tissues and do not clone the whole thing Discussion: Some government might use the technology to clone people and make a clone army Some government might use the technology to clone people and make a clone army An argument against that: Are you watching too much Star Wars? The technology to clone an entire being and clone an organ is quite different. Besides, even if that were to happen, it would be the government's fault, not the fault of the technology. Do we blame Eistein's E=mc^2 for nuclear bombs? Have you ever wondered whether human cloning is ethical Opinion essay “Is human cloning ethical” Preparation In order to strongly argue against cloning, there must be an understanding of its process and what exactly it is. Simply stated, a clone is a duplicate just like a photocopy. A good example of such “copies” that occur are identical twins, which are duplicates of each other Opinion Violation of the basic quality of uniqueness, loss of genetic diversity, not being able to know who is who, overpopulation, animal cruelty, and the fact that it is morally wrong makes cloning a wrong turn in technology. Opinion Even though there may be a few positive things about cloning, overall the cons show some serious outcomes that cloning could possibly cause in the future. Human Cloning Human cloning is such a new idea that no one can possibly know what could come out of it. Human Cloning In the world that we live in today, there are many issues that people disagree on. It is what makes the world so interesting, that all people, in free societies at least, can hold their own views, and share them with others. It is what makes our country great, the liberty to hold individual opinions and the right to free speech. One could say that never in the history of time has any moral issue had so much attention drawn to it as with human cloning. Human Cloning If it landed in the wrong hands, whose to say what could come of it. The problem with cloning is that it is impossible to use the consequences of it as a way of judging its rational and moral rightness, because the consequences are completely unknown. Human Cloning One example is that human clones are not an exact replica of the cloned individual. If human cloning is done with all good intentions, and is recognized as a universal maxim of the world, then not many people would argue against it. There just isn’t enough information to fully understand all that human cloning has to offer and also what catastrophes it could bring. a ripple effect – волновой эффект Human Cloning Human cloning could create unforeseen problems in the future causing a ripple effect, if you will, in the natural order of the human race. How would a clone feel growing up know that he or she is not unique, like many people take for granted? He or she would be a copy, not an original, a simple “photocopy” of another person Human Cloning The cons of human cloning lie in issues surrounding morality. Perhaps not allowing human cloning is a great mistake that would have its own consequences, in a negative sense. Human Cloning Human cloning would take years of deliberation and certainly some testing, to observe proper consequences, and then maybe a decision could be made. It is possible that clones begin to take over the world and cloning becomes extreme where armies of clones destroy original human species in vitro - в пробирке; в искусственных условиях; Human Cloning One standard argument against reproductive human cloning has its historical roots in the ethical debate over the use of in-vitro fertilisation. Many parents have lost a baby in a fire, car accident, or other unavoidable disaster. Opinions “Mankind is already "playing" God when we cure diseases, fly airplanes, create nuclear energy, or use any advanced technology.” Opinions Imagine a new race of people that are docile with super strength yet low intelligence. Next, imagine how easily for this race to fall into slavery. Cloning humans should be for the advancement of mankind and not the lessening of individuals. Opinions A lot of people worry that cloned people would not have full rights, since they are just copies. Others find this reasoning absolutely ridiculous, since a person is a person despite their genetic source or if artificial created. Reasons for allowing human cloning Selecting the most perfect genetic donor in someone’s opinion, whether it is Albert Einstein, Michael Jordan, or some other above average person, changes the norms of society. Imagine a world with fewer variations of people who are either super-geniuses or super-athletes. Reasons for allowing human cloning On the other hand, advances in science and technology would grow at an even faster rate and more people would be healthier. Reasons for allowing human cloning If human cloning is completely banned, then this type of research would be stopped and a lot of lives would be lost. Therefore, this type of human cloning should also be allowed. Discussion: Cloning is not ethical We will work in two groups. Group 1 is for cloning. Group 2 is against it. The leader of the first group will be…. The leader of the second group will be … . The leaders will organize the discussion of the arguments we have already discussed and at the end you’ll vote and make a conclusion. Choose the secretaries who will write all the arguments and then sum them up Please, discuss for 10 min your arguments using the arguments discussed at the previous lesson Group 2 Group 1 against Now let’s have a little discussion. Conclusion The secretaries should sum up the arguments in each group. Vote for the final decision with the help of red and green points on the interactive board Group 2 AGAINST Group 1 FOR Conclusion Conclusion Group 1 FOR In conclusion I should say, human cloning is a real breakthrough in modern science as it gives new opportunities in medicine. It is able to make people forget about such dangerous diseases as cancer and AIDs forever. A lot of families will become happier having children they couldn’t have before. It is impossible to predict all other positive changes we’ll get in future with the help of gene engineering. Be ready to write an opinion essay Plan: − introduction (state the problem) − your personal opinion and 2–3 reasons for it − opposing opinion and 1–2 reasons for it − why you don’t agree with the opposing opinion− conclusion restating your position Ресурсы http://www.globalchange.com/Cloning/ http://human-cloning.narod.ru/human-cloning.htm http://www.megaessays.com/ www.science.compulenta.ru www.infodog.ru
