The names of the holidays Peoples activities before and during the holidays
1.Christmas The holiday has grown in popularity and significance ever since. Santa Claus; brightly decorated Christmas trees; and plenty of wreathes, holly, and ribbons help define the season for most children.
2.Thanksgiving Day Both the historical and the religious origins of the event have largely given way to a secular celebration centered on the traditional Thanksgiving meal: turkey – an indigenous American bird – accompanied by foods common in early New England settlements, such as pumpkins, squashes, and cranberries
3.Halloween, the eve of All Saints’ Day. Halloween has become a celebration of witches, ghosts, goblins, and candy that is especially attractive to children. On this day and night, October 31, many homes are decorated and lit by jack-o’-lanterns, pumpkins that have been hollowed out and carved. Children dress up and go trick-or-treating, during which they receive treats from neighbors
4.The Fourth of July, or Independence Day, It is the premier American national celebration because it comemorates the day the United State proclaimed its freedom from Britain with the Declaration of Independence.
5.The Columbus Day. The holiday was formerly celebrated on October 12, the day explorer Christopher Columbus first landed in the West Indies, but it is now celebrated on the second Monday of October to allow for a three-day weekend. The holiday originally served as a traditional reminder of the «discovery» of America in 1492, but as Americans became more sensitive to their multicultural population, celebrating the conquest of Native Americans became more controversial
6.The Memorial Day First this holiday called Decoration Day and celebrated on May 30, was established to honor those who died during the American Civil War (1861-1865), then subsequently those who died in all American wars. Similarly, Veterans Day was first named Armistice Day and marked the end of World War I (1914-1918). During the 1950s the name of the holiday was changed in the United States, and its significance expanded to honor armed forces personnel who served in any American war.
7.May Day is regarded as the day of solidarity of the workers of the world. It commemorates the tragic events pf the years 1884-88 in Chicago when the workers were fighting for their rights. This is the day of friendship and support.
8.Easter People dye eggs and present them to their relatives and friends and besides they also go to the church and stay for a service there.
9.Victory Day. Observed on May 9 it commemorates the Victory of the Russian troops over the Nazi invaders. On that day the veterans meet in the parks and squares of the cities to recollect the days of war and exchange greetings. Wartime music is played everywhere. At night fireworks are let off.
10.New Year is celebrated with a New Year Tree, presents, Grandpa Frost, European Santa Claus, and a hearty meal. In our country New Year is toasted in champagne at family gatherings. New Year's feasts are widely covered by the mass media.
11.St. Valentine’s Day People write and sent beautiful greeting cards in the shape of a heart to someone as a sign of love.
12.Spring Bank Holiday
Also known as the ‘Late May Bank Holiday’ the Spring Bank Holiday falls on the last Monday of May. Many UK towns and villages hold fetes and festivals to celebrate the Spring Bank Holiday, perhaps the most famous of these being the annual cheese-rolling competition at Coopers Hill in Gloucestershire. Exceptionally, in 2012, the Spring Bank Holiday has been moved to the first Monday in June to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
13.Summer Bank Holiday (England, Wales and Northern Ireland only)
Excepting Scotland, the summer bank Holiday falls on the last Monday of August each year and this is a particularly busy holiday weekend for tourists wishing to visit Britain’s holiday resorts and theme parks. A defining event of the Summer Bank Holiday is the Notting Hill Carnival which takes place in Notting Hill, London and is a colourful Caribbean-styled street festival featuring flamboyant costumes, dancing and steel-band music.
14.Boxing Day Bank Holiday
Falling upon December 26th, Boxing Day takes its name from the custom of boxed gifts and can refer to the alms boxes which appeared in churches at Christmas time allowing churchgoers to donate money to the poor, or from the wealthy classes giving boxed gifts to their servants. Traditionally in the UK Boxing Day is associated with sporting events and particularly hunting.
15.Women’s Day It is a spring holiday when all men and children congratulate their mothers and wives on this festive occasion and give them flowers and other presents
