A saiga (Saiga tatarica) is a steppe antelope It lives in semi- deserts and steppes Our goal is 1) Tell YOU about these animals 2) and make you tell YOUR friends further about saiga problem 3) through this try to prevent saiga from dying out YOU Your friends What do they look like? Appearance: In summer: the saiga’s coat a rich chestnut colour and its belly and legs are pale. In winter: it has a thick, pale buff coat What do they look like? Height: Roughly the size of a goat, about 70cm tall. Weight: Males weigh about 41kg and females about 28kg. Diet: Grasses, herbs and shrubs. Why do they have such a funny nose?;) The large humped nose hangs over the mouth of the saiga. The nose is flexible it helps to breathe clean air during dusty summers and warm air during cold winters. History of saigas During the Ice Age the saiga lived from the British Isles through Central Asia. At the beginning of the 18th century it was still distributed from the shores of the Black Sea and the northern edge of the Caucasus into Dzungaria and Mongolia. Where are saigas now? They live in Kalmykia, three areas of Kazakhstan and in Mongolia , Tukmenistan and Uzbekistan Saiga in Zoos Currently only the Moscow Zoo keeps saiga. Cologne, Germany and San Diego Zoos, USA, had them in the past. How many saigas are there? Now there are only 50 000 species!
