Adyghey Games
We live in Russia, Adyghey Republic. We live in Maykop- the capital of Adyghey. In our school we have a special sport ground where we play football. In our school we also play table tennis, chess and draughts. In our Adyghey Republic we have even special Adyghey draughts. Here are some Adyghey games from “ancient times”.
The Leader of the hole
Preparations: The game takes place on the playground or the gymnasium. In the middle of the playground they dig a hole and put a little ball in it. Five or twenty people take part in the game. They choose a leader.
Description of the game: The players stand five or seven meters from the hole, the leader of the hole calls out one name of the players. This player must take the ball quickly and hit somebody who runs away. If he fails to hit he leaves the game, if he hit the player this player leaves the game. The winner of the game becomes the leader of the hole.
The rules of the game:
You must hit only directly.
The winner will be the last player.
Unmounted Horsemen
Preparations: The game takes place on the playground. Even number of boys take part in this game. They choose each other “a horseman” and “a horse”.
Description of the game: “A horseman” sits down on the back of “a horse” and holds his body with his legs. Then the horses come up closer to each other, horsemen try to push his adversary. The winner is who stands on the feet and doesn’t fall.
The rules of the game:
The pair goes out of the game if somebody falls.
The “horse” doesn’t take part in the struggle.
The fallen pair does not take part in the game.
Strike the ear
Prepa Preparations: Three or more players can take part in this game. They choose the leader throwing lots.
Description of the game: the leader holds his right part of his face by his right hand, his left hand is under his right hand under his arm, palm up. The players stand behind him, somebody strikes the leader’s left palm and all of them show the right palm. The leader turns around and tries to guess the striker. If he finds the striker, they change their places.
The rules of the game:
You must not show the striker in any way.
The strike must be done only palm to palm.
Who doesn’t follow the rules; he must change the places with the leader.
Hide-and-seek
Preparations: The game takes place in the open air. The number of the players is not fixed. The players take a long stick and every player holds it by one hand. Whose hand will be at the top he is the leader. They make agreement the time the leader must count with closed eyes.
Description of the game: The leader comes up to the tree or a fence, closes his eyes and counts till the number. Then he says “I am coming”, and begins to search the players. If he fins anybody he must run down him and touch his shoulder or a back. The hidden player must run and touch the place where the leader stood beforehand.
The rules of the game:
A spotted player will be if the leader distinctly touched his back or shoulder.
If the leader couldn’t find the hidden players, he must loudly surrender. In this case he go on to be a leader and seeks the other players.
A Lump of Wool
Preparations: There may be to twenty players. You must have a playground with a plane surface, the length is thirty – fifty metres and the width is ten – fifteen metres. They hammer in the picket five or seven metres from the edge of the playground. The players divide into two teams with the captain. The first team is called “wild cats”, the second – “domestic cats”.
Description of the game: They throw lots, who will be at home, and who will be on the playground. Players at home in turn throw the ball at the playground, then run through the playground and the picket back home, at this moment he is untouchable. If the adversary hits the player with the ball, the teams change their places.
The rules of the game:
You must not run out of the edges of the playground.
You must not delay a running player by hands.
You must not backheel the player.
Each set consists of five throwing of the ball.
The team which throws the ball three times and doesn’t fail, he is the winner.
Passing the Stones
Preparations: The game takes place on the open playground. The players (10 or more young people) build a circle. Two players standing opposite each other hold stones in their arms (each stone weights 1 or 2 kilograms). The leader stands in the middle of the circle.
Description of the game: The players holding the stones begin to pass them to the neighbor at the leader’s command. The leader accelerates the speed by clapping.
The rules of the game:
Who drops the stone leaves the game.
When three players left and the stone drops< the player leaves the game, and the player who didn’t catch the stone leaves the game.
The winner will be the last player.
The players stand in one rank, bend down, ring round each other’s belt (the figure of the elephant). The winner sits down on their back and rides three circles.
The winner becomes the leader.
