The History of the Olympic GamesThe first modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens, and featured 280 participants from 13 nations, competing in 43 events. Since 1994, the Summer and Winter Olympic Games have been held separately and have alternated every two years.The Olympic Games, which originated in ancient Greece as many as 3,000 years ago, were revived in the late 19th century and have become the world’s preeminent sporting competition. From the 8th century B.C. to the 4th century A.D., the Games were held every four years in Olympia, located in the western Peloponnese peninsula, in honor of the god Zeus.

They included many different events, such as sprint, boxing, wrestling, discus throw, long jump and others. All the cities in Greece sent best athletes to Olympia to compete in the Games. When the Games took place, all the wars and disputes stopped. So, the Olympic Games became the symbol of peace and friendship.In 1896 the first modern Olympic Games took place and the educational value of sports for modern man based on Greek ideals.Now, there are Summer and Winter Olympic Games. They are held separately. There are always several cities wishing to host the Games. The International Committee of Olympic Games selects the most suitable city. Thousands of athletes, journalists and guests arrive to the Games and it takes great efforts to arrange everything.Russia joined the Olympic movement in 1952. In 1980, Moscow hosted the twenty-second Olympic Games.
