Let’s rock grammar today! English teacher: Barsegian Lilit,Saint-Petersburg

Warm up questions:
Do you like music?
What’s your favourite band or singer?
Do you enjoy live concerts?
Have you ever been to a rock concert?
Presentation
Teacher introduces to students two people (Slide 1) saying:

‘Let’s meet Sarah and her new boyfriend Tom. They love rock music and live concerts. Sarah met Tom at the concert a couple of months ago.
Teacher plays some music (‘Rock bottom’ UFO, about 1 minute) and asks students to close their eyes and imagine Sarah and Tom’s first meeting at the concert (SLIDE ).
Students work in pairs and tell each other what they have just imagined then they share their stories with the whole class.
Teacher says:
‘Tom’s dream is to have his own rock band and buy a new guitar. Unfortunately he doesn’t have enough money (SLIDE 2)
Teacher tries to elicit from students the second half of the conditional sentence.
Model sentence:
If Tom had enough money, he…………………………………
(he would buy a new guitar).
Repetition drill:
Students repeat the model sentence, left and right side and then some individuals.
Substitution drill:
Teacher shows to students some other musical instruments, their task is to repeat the model sentence substituting ‘a guitar’ with some other words. (SLIDE 3)
If Tom had enough money, he would buy ……. (drums).
Board stage: Conditional type 2
Teacher asks students to say which tenses are used in 2 Conditional.
Teacher elicits from students :
If + Past Simple, would + infinitive
Students open the books: Oxford Learner’s Pocket Verbs and Tenses by Jon Hird and look at 96 – Conditional Type 2.
Their task is to read section A and report back to the teacher the meaning of the second conditional.
We use Type 2 Conditional sentence to express something imaginary or hypothetical about the present or future. (Slide 4)
Examples: If I had more time, I’d read a lot more.
I’d get a new computer if I could afford it.
Teacher points out to students that ‘would’ is usually contracted to ‘d, especially in speaking or informal writing.
*Adapted from OLPVT by Jon Hird
Together with the students, the teacher analyses section A.
PRESENTATION PART 2
Sarah is going to introduce her new boyfriend to her parents today, but look Tom has arrived at the meeting like this ;) (Slisde 5)

Let’s Begin the COMPETITION
Students are divided into groups. They are to name their group, for example choosing the names of their favourite bands
e.g 1 -The Beatles… etc
Teacher informs students about a surprise waiting for the winners at the end of the lesson.
Teacher gets the students to work in groups and write some pieces of advice for Sarah:
Example: If I were you, I would ask Tom to have his hair cut.
Teacher gives the example of the first sentence and asks students to repeat.
Students open OLPVT page 97 and read section E, F then they analyze the sections with teacher’s help.
COMPETITION part 1
If I were you….
Each group is to write 3 conditional sentences strating from: If I were you, …….
Teacher sets time limit - 5 mins, collects the sentences (each correct sentence – 1 point).
The names of the groups are written down on the board to add points for each group.
COMPETITION part 2
Teacher puts some posters in the classroom, each group has its own poster in some distance from their desks (section E, F from OLPVT by Jon Hird), one member of the group runs to the poster and tries to remember as many sentences as possible, he/she comes back to the group and dictates to the other members of the group. The winner is the group which collects all the information.
Teacher plays some background music during the ‘race’
Teacher reads through E, F section and TIP with students (If I were you, I’d… is a useful phrase to give advice)
Competition part 3
Teacher shows to students some slides with the conditional sentence: If you could…
e.g If you could date a celebrity, who would that be? (slide with the pictures of 3 famous celebrities)
If you could meet any famous person dead or alive, who would it be? (slide with famous people like scientists, stars, politicians… etc
If you could go to the concert anywhere in the world, which would you choose? (slide with pictures of 3 different bands).
Optional: Teacher can play some video clips of the band or singers from the slide
Students work in the same groups, they are to decide as a group , choose only one answer and write it down on the piece of paper. Then the teacher collects the groups’ answers and the competing begins as the other groups are to guess what answers their opponents have chosen. The winner is the group with the biggest number of points.
Teacher plays ‘We are the champions’ by Queen to end the lesson in the positive note
The winning group in the middle of the classroom, teacher says:
‘As I promised at the beginning of the competition: the surprise is waiting for the winners
Each of you get 5 – hi 5
(each student of the winning group gets the highest mark)
Optional communicative activity:
Chain of events
Teacher gives students the first clause of second conditional sentence. The first student completes that sentence in his/her own words. The next student takes the second clause from the first student’s sentence, and changes it into the first part of another sentence, for example:
First student: If I had enough money, I would go to the USA.
Second student: If I went to New York, I would…..
Students work in the same groups. Teacher adds points for each group (each correct sentence gets 1 point).
HOMEWORK
Students watch some interviews on youtube (2 Conditional – What would you do if you won the lottery)
https://youtu.be/Ph1XijXGBt0
Their task is to interview some people from their school (using their smartphones for example). They are to attach it to EDMODO.
