The Little Fir Tree
A little Fir-tree stood among the tall fir-trees of the forest. It had leaves like long green needles. It was a pretty little tree, but it was not happy. One day it said, “I do not like needles. My needles are hard. The birds will not nest in them. All the other trees have leaves. I wish I had green leaves.”Next day, when the little Fir-tree woke up, it had broad green leaves. It was just like the other trees. But in the night there was a heavy snowfall. The branches were broken.“Oh, I am so unhappy! There are no leaves on my branches. I feel so cold. I want leaves of gold”, the little Fir-tree said.Next morning the little Fir-tree was glad to see that all its leaves had turned a beautiful yellow gold. It was very proud of its new dress. But a man came, picked all the gold leaves and carried them away. The little Fir-tree began to weep.“Oh, I am so unhappy! I am very cold. I wish I had glass leaves. Nobody want my glass leaves.”Next morning the little Fir-tree had leaves of glass. “How happy I am!” , it said. @Just have a look at my leaves shining in the sun!”But suddenly a strong wind began to blow and broke all the glass leaves. Again the little Fir-tree’s branches were bare.“Oh!” said the little Fir-tree. “I wish I had my own needles again. Men don’t want them. The wind won’t break them.”The next day the little fir-tree had its own needles again and felt sure there were no leaves in the world as fine as hers.
