SIR WALTER SCOTTHIS LIFE AND WORK(1771-1832) HIS LIFESir Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh on August 15, 1771.His father was a lawyer and the future writer was the ninth of his twelve children. His parents thought country air would be good for him, so they sent him to his grandparent’s farm. HIS LIFEWalter’s grandparents told him thrilling tales of adventures and stories of crumbling abbeys and old castles.He learned to love history of Scotland and liked reciting ballads and poems.When went to school his favorite collection of ballads was called “Reliques of Ancient English Poetry” by Bishop Percy. Later he had a chance to meet him. HIS WORKAt the suggestion of his father, Scott became a lawyer and practised for fourteen years.Scott wished to record all the historical facts he knew before they were forgotten.Scott’s first published work was a translation of Goethe’s historical play “Gotz von Berlichingen”. AbbotsfordAt the age of twenty-six Scott married and lived at Abbotsford. His house there was filled with rare objects:the purse of Rob Roy, old Scottish armour and weapons, rare pictures and books etc.Scott’s life was most regular and everyday by twelve o’clock he was “his own man” ready to entertain his friends who often came to visit him. Among his guests there were many famous people.
