Our work is dedicated to one of the most prominent English writers – Charles Dickens.
He was not only an English writer but a social critic. He created some of the world’s most memorable fictional characters and is considered to be one of the greatest novelists.
He was born on the 7-th of February, 1812 in Portsmouth, England. Charles was the second of eight children. His father, John Dickens, worked in an office and had to work hard to make both ends meet. His mother, Elizabeth Dickens(born Barrow), looked after a big family.
When Charles was 10, his family moved to London, where his father got into debtor’s prison. After that, Charles left school for work in a factory. For two years he worked in a dirty room pasting labels on bottles. Then he went to school for threemore years. He had little formal education but stillsucceeded in his life.
Charles wrote 15 novels, 5 novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles. He also worked for 20 years as an editor in a weekly journal. Dickens’ other merits include campaigns for children’s rights, education and other social reforms. He obtained international attention and fame in 1836 with a series of publications called “Pickwick Papers”. He used to be a young and poor reporter at that time, who immediately became a famous writer.
Dickens published many other novels later. Among them “Oliver Twist”, “Dombey and Son”, “David Copperfield” and many others. His books are rather interesting to read. He mostly wrote about the hard life of poor people in Victorian England. Even though he lived more than a hundred years ago, people still read his books with pleasure. One of his most influential works ever written was “A Christmas Carol” novella.
His fellow writers of that time highly praised his literary genius. Leo Tolstoy, George Orwell, Chesterton were among them.
We must say about the great influence of Dickens’ books on our great Russian write – Feodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky. Flexibility and richness in Dickens's narrative style, characterization, and themes, particularly in the large novel “The Pickwick Papers” were highly attractive for Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, whose search for models of characterization and style was an essential part of his creative process.
Being distinctive and even idiosyncratic, Dostoevsky's imagery cannot be comprehended without appreciating Dickens's role in his Russian contemporary's development of his unique style. For Dostoevsky's innovative use of language the most important element in Dickens's writing was the English novelist's using his visual imagination to express human feelings and relationships. One can appreciate Dostoevsky's inimitable style and characterization more clearly by comparing his characters and plots with those in Dickens's works.
While living outside Russia, Dostoevsky drew the attention of his wife, Anna Grigorjevna, to the works of Dickens. Joking about their poverty during the Dresden period, Dostoevsky refers to himself as "Mr. Micawber" and to Anna Grigorjevna as "Mrs. Micawber." Anna Dostoevskaya recalls that "Dickens's sense of humour was part of our life." She noted in her diary during May 1867 that her husband borrowed from a Dresden library The Old Curiosity Shop [2] in French, but refused the offer of a copy of David Copperfield [2] because he had already read it. In Dresden both Fyodor Michailovitch and Anna Grigoryevna read Dickens in French and Russian translations.
“When our father went to Ems, he was not able to read himself because of his work, [so] he made our mother, Anna Grigoryevna, read aloud [to him the works of] Walter Scott and Dickens, this Great Christian, as my father called him in his Diary of a Writer. During the dinner time my father asked us whether we were impressed by Dickens's novels and [whether we] recollected the episodes from Dickens's works. My father, who forgot the second name of his wife and the face of his sweetheart, remembered the names of all the characters from Dickens's novels.” – One of Dostoevsky’s children remembered.
Charles Dickens` works were translated in many languages. He was and is still among the most popular English writers in Russia.
Numerous films were made on Dickens’ works. In our presentation we show only films, made on “Christmas carol” and a tiny part of one of them.
Charles Dickens died on the 9th of June, 1870.Contrary to his wish to be buried at Rochester Cathedral "in an inexpensive and strictly private manner“, he was laid to rest in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey.
A printed epitaph circulated at the time of the funeral reads: "To the Memory of Charles Dickens (England's most popular author) who died at his residence, Higham, near Rochester, Kent, 9 June 1870, aged 58 years. He was a sympathizer with the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest writers is lost to the world."
