FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Formative Assessment can be used at any stage of the lesson, and is used to assess students’ knowledge as the lesson progresses, rather than just at the end of a specified period (unit, quarter, semester, and year). It allows the teacher to adjust the lesson plan based on students’ actual progress. Formative assessment is “embedded in the strategies the teacher uses to deliver an experience. It can be challenging to assess several parts of a lesson simultaneously, and that is when tools like rubrics or learning maps are useful” (Davis, 2015). For both teachers from the both videos formative assessment is not the aim “to put marks such as A, B, C or D, but to figure out what is going on in their classes”, how useful and productive they are and where they are moving to (Crandle, 2015). Each teacher assesses everything – from the reaction of each student on the task to the implementation and reflection stage. Everything matters – even the tiniest movement from the learner’s side. In case the students are not interested, it means that he or she either knows too much about the material or does not understand anything at all.
Formative assessment is an evaluation of an ongoing process of learning. Therefore the teacher creates an informal atmosphere in the class. Children can sit on the floor or in the school’s corridor on the stairs (Mook, 2011). Each teacher checks his students’ mistakes and understands why the error occurred; was it just a slip or rooted in the whole material misunderstanding fossiled mistake.
In case, the students are active and positive, can explain what they did and why they chose one or another way of solving the problem, it is a demonstration of the learners’ comprehension. The strongest students can teach the weakest; that is not an appropriate way for the formal assessment. Current progress is easy to judge by the atmosphere in the class. The confident and relaxed atmosphere is the proof for the students’ current success. The students are not distracted by other things. They all are actively participating in the lesson – it is the strongest evidence that everything goes well.
The efficient and productive educational process is possible only if the relationships between the students and their teachers are excellent. From both videos, we can see that the teachers provided the atmosphere of fun and relaxation. The teacher of the 3rd-grade students put on the pencil on his ear (Crandle, 2015). Another teacher of Math in the 7th grade is used to mimic in a funny way as well as let sat with his students on the stairs watching them while solving problems (Mook, 2011).
Ongoing or formative assessment is more that just evaluation – it is the way to understand and reflect where you are now and how to help yourself and your students to grow in the professional area
