Geographical positionGreat Britain is an island, which is situated to the northwest of Continental Europe. It is the 9-th largest island in Europe. Great Britain and 1000 smaller islands which surround it are called the British Isles.
The UK is divided into 4 parts – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is separated from the continent by the North Sea and by the English Channel.
PopulationThe population is about 60 million people, so Great Britain is one of the most populated countries in Europe.
LondonThe largest city of the country as well as the capital of it is London. London is situated on the river Thames. The city is rather old and beautiful. It was founded more than two thousand years ago. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, the West End, the East End and Westminster. The City is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre.
Tourism plays an important part in the economy of the country. Tourists from all over the world come to see the top attractions of England, which include the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, Stonehenge, Roman Baths, Leeds Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon and many other places of historical and architectural significance.
The Tower of London is a very old building. It is nine hundred years old. The Tower of London stands on the Thames.The English kings lived in the Tower. Then it was a prison.The black ravens live in the gardens of the Tower now. The English people like them very much. Now the Tower of London is a museum and many people from other countries come to see it. St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most beautiful buildings in London. It has one of the highest domes in the world and is considered to be the second largest church in the UK. It was designed in the late 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren.The cathedral contains the graves of many famous people.

Sports play an important part in the life of Britain and is a popular leisure activity.Many of the world’s famous sports began in Britain, including cricket, football, lawn tennis, golf and rugby.British national sport is cricket although to many people football (soccer)is seen as a national sport. Some of the British football teams are world famous, the most famous being Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.
