Welcome To The United States Of America The USA is a very big country : the rivers and the mountains are big, and the population is big. It is situated in the central part of the continent of North America. The USA takes the fourth position after Russia, Canada and China in size. The total area of the USA is over nine million square kilometers. The USA occupies the territory from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. In the west it is washed by the Pacific Ocean. Its eastern coast is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. It is also washed by the Arctic Ocean, the Bering Sea and the Caribbean Sea. In the North the USA has a border with Canada. In the South it shares borders with Mexico. The longest rivers are : the Mississippi River, the Columbia and the Colorado. The river that connects Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean is the St. Lawrence River and the Hudson River. Telling about the geographical peculiarities of this country, we should mention Niagara Falls. It is one of the most beautiful scenes in the world. The word “Niagara” is an Indian word which means “roaring waters’. And that is definitely true because the loud sound of falling water can be heard 25 kilometers away from the place. The cliff where the water is falling from is 27 meters, so it makes a very loud noise. The American Flag The US flag has thirteen white lines, or stripes, that represent the thirteen colonies; the fifty stars represent the fifty states. The colours have symbolic meaning too: red- hardiness and valour, white- purity and innocence, blue- justice. The National Symbol The National Symbol of the USA, the bald eagle, is the only eagle unique to North America. It was chosen as an emblem because of its long life, great strength and impressive looks . The eagle symbolizes independence and freedom. Climate The USA is a very big country it has a number of climatic regions on its territory. They are continental, subtropical, desert, arctic and some other regions. Subtropical climate is in the central part, the climate of Alaska is arctic. The north and the north-east are the coldest regions and much snow falls in winter there. There are big cities, a lot of big houses and big cars. People have big dream , too. Everyone wants to live “the American Dream” – the idea that anyone who works hard can become successful and rich. It is a dream that really happens for some people, but it happens more often in movies and books. Manhattan New York City, USA Many immigrants have gone to the USA hoping they will become one of the lucky ones. Today, the USA is home to many people from different races and ethnic groups. In the 19th and 20th centuries, when immigrants started their new lives in America, most of them learned English. Brooklyn San Francisco Almost all Americans understand that they live in a country with a very interesting history and are proud of their traditions. Population is more than 300 million people. It is a society of immigrants because it has always attracted people from all over the world. First there were Spanish, English and French explorers. It’s interesting to know …Because of a wide range of nationalities the country is usually called a “melting pot”, “salad bowl”, “vegetable soup”. But it is not “melted”. The USA is the country of immigrants who preserve their national identity while being Americans.
