Our Team: 3 D (Darim Dobro Drugim) Our Motto: Open your heart to love and kindness and you will see the world is perfect! Our emblem: a white camomile a symbol of purity, love, kindness, charity and beauty! Our research is about Jessica Long, a professional swimmer The Long way to success… Name: Jessica Tatiana Long Name at Birth: Tatiana Olegovna Kirillova Birthday: February 29th, 1992 (Leap Day) Birthplace: Irkutsk, Russia Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland, USA Paralympic Records: Currently 3 World Records: Currently 20 Paralympic Medals: 12 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze World Championship Medals: 20 gold, 6 silver Jessica grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, but she is originally from Siberia. She was born with fibular hemimelia, so she didn’t have fibulas, ankles, heels, and most of the other bones in her feet. Jessica was adopted from Russian orphanage when she was 13 months old. When she was 18 months old, the rest of her lower parts of her legs were amputated so that she could be fitted for prosthetic legs and learn how to walk. Jessica is one of six children and her parents made sure they all remained active. The girl have been involved in many sports including gymnastics, basketball, cheerleading, ice skating, biking, running, and rock climbing. However, Jessica always loved swimming the most. She learned how to swim in her grandparents’ pool where she and her sisters would spend hours pretending they were mermaids. When Jessica was 10 years old, she joined her first competitive swim team. That’s when the girl learned all four strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle).  She thought she was going to drown the first time she tried to do butterfly across the entire length of the pool, but Jessica was determined to keep going and now butterfly is her best stroke. The girl hold the world record! Her first international competition was the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. At 12 years old, Jessica was the youngest athlete on the US Paralympic Swim Team. She won three gold medals . Ten years after joining that first swim team, Jessica is still doing what she loves. Swimming has opened up a lot of doors for her, from giving motivational speeches, to winning prestigious awards, to working with great companies like Coca-Cola, Visa, and Ralph Lauren. Every day Jessica puts her heart and soul into training …She is looking forward to representing the United States again and showing the world just how much you can achieve by never giving up! Who would have ever imagined that a girl with a “disability” from an orphanage in Siberia would be where Jessica is today? Jessica’s Favorite Quote: “Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” – Christopher Robin I would like to thank God, my family, friends, and coaches for always encouraging me! I couldn’t be successful without them! P.S.
