Presentation
Read out the expressions and ask students to translate. Read them again and ask students to repeat. Give special attention to the streets:
Happy birthday. Happy New Year Congratulations!
Happy anniversary Good luck!
Play the recording. Students listen and check their answers.
With a stronger class, you may like to mention some verbs that are often used with some of these nouns, for example: make / bake a cake, light a candle, put up decorations, let off fireworks, give / get /receive a present.

Ask students to think of special occasions that go with the words. You could do this with the whole class or ask students to work in pairs.
Ask students to look at the pictures and say what they can see. Write key words on the board. Use the pictures to introduce the words superstition, marriage and blow out (candles) and to revise fish, spider, full moon, snake and wedding.
Students read the text quickly and pick out the words for special occasions. Ask them to guess the meaning of New Year’s Eve, and elicit or explain the meaning of Good Friday.

Read through the text with the class and elicit or explain any other new words (for example, make a wish, skin turn into.
Focus on the word unless and explain that it means “if not”. Unless you clean your house means “If you don’t clean your house”.
Play the recording. Students listen and check their answers.
Ask questions to check comprehension, for example:
-Are these sentences about the present, past or future? (The future)
-Will the results definitely happen in the future? (No - only if something else happen first.)
- Which superstitions are about bad luck? (2d, 4 e, 5g)
-Which one is about money? (7c)
-Do we have any of these superstitions in our country?

Students activity
In pairs, students join the sentence parts to make the other superstitions. If there seem to be several possibilities for one answer, tell them to go on with the other sentences and return to it later. They should look for the combinations that make the best since.
