Julius Caesar invaded Britain. The Romans brought Latin to Britain. ‘Early English’ was the language of the Germanic tribes. In 878 AD, the Vikings invaded Britain from Scandinavia, bringing with them the Norse language. King William the Conqueror and his Norman army of France won English King Harold in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings. The Normans brought the Old French language, which became the language of the Royal Court and the ruling and business class. NO MORE INVASIONS English came back with many French words added and it’s called Middle English, language of the poet Chaucer. Chaucer (1340-1400) The greatest poet before Shakespeare. He was an English author, poet, philosopher, bureaucrat, courtier and diplomat, sometimes called the father of English literature. Big revolution was coming - the printing press. Shakespeare gave the English language many phrases and sayings, which people still use every day. This one is very famous : Many phrases and quotations from it have become part of the English language. King James MODERN ENGLISHEnglish has continued to change. Settlers from Britain moved across the world and language took words from other languages.With the increase in different directions, all ‘Englishes’ have mixed. And words from many other languages have been borrowed. So modern English continues to change and develop.English has become the world’s international language.
