Epistolary genre of internet englishBy artem zabelin school #832Learn English- Understand the World

IntroductionNowadays the Internet is considered to be the most available and the cheapest way of communication. That is why people of all ages are interested in it. But teenagers are the most absorbed with the Net. I’m not an exception. As for me, surfing the Net and “chatting “in it is one of the most exciting pastime activities. For this very reason I’ve chosen this topic. Moreover, English is my favorite subject and it’s obvious that speaking about Internet one should investigate innovations and changes in the English language. Actually, almost all communication in the Global Net occurs in English.
So, the object of my research is the epistolary genre of internet English and particularly its peculiarities .Epistolary form is the form of private letters used to express thoughts in times of ancient Greeks and Romans. ( the term comes from Greek “epistole”- letter). Epistolary Internet English and its peculiarities are taken as the subject of this research. Epistole - letter A brief surveyI’ve made a survey among teenagers and grown-ups to find out their attitude towards Internet and changes in the epistolary genre. 1) Free timeTeens Adults2)Do you understand abbreviations?Teens Adults Stylistic features of the Internet language- Appearance of new words;- Abbreviations;- Non-standard use of graphical tools;- Smileys as means of expressing emotions. Appearance of new words Word building is one of the most important sources of fulfilling the vocabulary of the Global net. There are interesting cases such as keeping the borrowed morpheme in its original form in Latin graphical form: chatланин, or abbreviation is kept in the form of native language (PTP- сервер).Sometimes the borrowed form of the new word is associated with a native word, which sounds alike. As a result of this we have got the word «мыло» meaning “e-mail”. - Сбрось фотку на мыло. Abbreviations Abbreviations should be mentioned as an inherent attribute of dialogs and chat groups. They can be alphabetic and alphanumeric. Most of all I like the following one: ROFLBTCASTC- rolling on the floor laughing biting the carpet and scaring the cat. Non- standard use of graphical tools. Here I’d like to mention one phenomenon, it’s the creation of Russian words with Russian morphemes from English ones like “hacker” –хакерство- хакнуть, mail- мейлить, etc. Smileys as means of expressing emotionIconic signs are made up similarly to the phenomena and subjects which they are meant to express. Smileys, or emoticons (hybrid of “emotion” and “icon”) are pictograms. They don’t depend on the language or its grammar rules. With the help of so-called “emoticons” one can show his/her feelings, mood. Two main categories of smileys should be mentioned:- Semantic;- Emotional.Emotional smileys are used more frequently than the semantic ones.- happy-angry ConclusionIn conclusion I’d like to say that the language of GN is receptive to new phenomena if they are expressive enough. The epistolary genre which was popular and rather widespread in the 19th century has got its second birth owing to the popularity of the GN. As English is the leading language in the GN it experiences certain changes.Thank you for your attention
