Old Scotland YardIn the 10th century, King Edgar of England gave the King of Scotland a piece of land in London. But in the 12th century, the Scottish people revolved against England, and the English King took the land back. This piece of land became known as “Scotland” to the people of London. The house that had been built there fell into ruin. During James’ I reign, the site was divided into two plots, or “yards”, called Great Scotland Yard and Middle Scotland Yard . Gradually some government buildings were constructed there. In 1829, Sir Robert Peel, a famous British politician, a Member of Parliament, founded the London police force. They set up their office in Scotland Yard, and Londoners soon began calling the police department ‘Scotland Yard ‘ Early Scotland Yard police officers worked 10 hours a day and walked 20 miles on duty. They had no days off and only one week’s holiday a year. And they didn’t get paid when they were on duty. Peel’s policemen were dressed in black trousers, blue coats and top hats. The uniform was carefully chosen to make them look more like ordinary people. The top hat was replaced by the famous helmet in 1863. London police officers are still called bobbies, the short form of Robert. Current location of the Metropolitan Police In 1890, Scotland Yard moved its offices to a new place overlooking the Thames. But soon the new building became too small for the growing police force and in 1967 Scotland Yard moved to a modern 20-storey building near the Houses of Parliament. It is called New Scotland Yard.
