Scotland Scotland is in the north-west Europe and is a part of Great Britain, an island country and the United Kingdom. Scotland is the second largest country in the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Scotland has some 790 islands - 130 inhabited. English(official) and Gaelic are the main languages of Scotland. The climate of Scotland is temperate and tends to be very changeable, but rarely extreme. It is warmed by the Gulf Stream from the Atlantic, and given its northerly latitude it is much warmer than areas on similar latitudes. Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland. Aberdeen and Dundee are amongst the other major cities in the country. The pound sterling commonly called the pound, is the official currency of the United Kingdom. The slang term "quid" is often used in place of "pound", depending on the region. The flora of Scotland is an assemblage of native plant species including over 1,600 vascular plants, more than 1,500 lichens and nearly 1,000 bryophytes. The total number of vascular species is low by world standard but lichens and bryophytes are abundant and the latter form a population of global importance. Various populations of rare fern exist. There are a variety of important trees species and specimens; a Douglas Fir near Inverness is the tallest tree in the United Kingdom and the Fortingall Yew may be the oldest tree in Europe. The Shetland Mouse-ear and Scottish Primrose are endemic flowering plants and there are a variety of endemic mosses and lichens. Numerous references to the country's flora appear in folklore, song and poetry. Scotland is famous for Haggis. It is a food made from the organs of sheep and oatmeal. Famous musicians of Scotland include Annie Lennox, Wet Wet Wet, Travis and Simple Minds. Scotland is very well known in the world for its whisky, popularly known as Scotch whisky. Television, telephone, video cassette recorder, finger printing, home of golf, tarmacadam, tyres are penicillin were all Scottish inventions.
