GREAT BRITAIN AND ITS CAPITAL ENGLAND SCOTLAND WALES NORTHERN IRELAND The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official name of the state which is situated in the British Isles. It consists of four countries which are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK is an island state. The two main islands are Great Britain and Ireland. The UK is separated from the continent by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover. More than 56 million people live in Britain. Many of them live in big cities like London, Man- chester and Liverpool. There are many lonely hills ,quiet rivers , deep lakes and just farmlands especially in the south of the country. The Queen is the symbol of the country history and its traditions. Buckingham Palace is the London residence of the Queen. The Royal standard flying over it is the sign that the Queen is in the residence. This Gothic building is the Houses of Parliament, seat of government. The Clocktower of the Houses of Parliament is known as Big Ben.It was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the First Commissioner of Works. The Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror. It has served as fortress, palace and state prison.The black ravens live in the Tower.It is believed that if they disappear England will fall ,so their wings are clipped. Westminster Abbey has been the coronation place of all 39 English monarchs. Many of the monarchs are buried here. It was called the West Monastery. The Abbey contains about 1000 monuments. They commemorate many great names from Britain history: ministers, writers and poets. St .Paul`s Cathedral is one of the most famous building in the world. It was built by sir Christo- pher Wren. The National Gallery has a collection of Italian, Dutch, German and French pictures. Edinburgh Castle Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. Edinburgh Castle is a famous fortress built on Castle Rock in the center of Edinburgh. A view of Edinburgh Edinburgh Stonehenge is one of the Europe`s biggest stone circles that is 10 or 12 metres high. The earliest part of Stonehenge is approximately 5000 years old. Wales is a country in the United Kingdom, West of England. It has high mountains. There is a lot of agriculture there, coal-mining was a main industry. The national symbols of Wales are the daffodil and the red dragon. The patron saint of Wales is St. David.. The beautiful views of Wales. The British are said to be a country- men at heart.The British countryside is many things to many people. It stands for freshness, for leisure, fun and games. Northern Ireland lies west of Wales England and Scotland and is separa- ted from them by the Irish Sea .Ireland is known for its beautiful, green country- side, fine architecture, a rich culture and friendly people. The patron saint of Northern Ireland is St .Patrick. Culturally Ireland is a treasure chest and is famous as the home to some of the great writers of our time such as James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw William Butler Yeats and Seamus Heaney.
