His father was a world-famous Professor of phonetics and the inventor of the system which he called "Visible Speech". It helped the deaf to pronounce words they could not hear. This is Alexander Melville Bell, father to Alexander Graham Alexander chose the same profession, and like his father he became a teacher of the deaf. He moved to the United States and began to teach deaf children to speak. At the same time he studied the human voice and worked at improving his father's invention. Bell’s mother and wife were both deaf. This had a major influence on his work.This is Alexander Graham Bell's wife,  Mabel Gardiner Hubbard. This is Eliza Grace Symonds, mother to Alexander Graham. Then Alexander Bell beganexperimenting with amachine to help the deafhear. While experimenting,Graham had an idea. He decided to send the voice from one place toanother. For years Bell and hisassistant Thomas Watsonworked day and night. At last they decided to try a new kind of transmitter. The new transmitter was set in Bell's bedroom on the first floor. Watson was sitting in the laboratory on the ground floor . He put his ear to the receiver and began waiting. Suddenly he heard Bell's voice. And not the voice only but the words too: "Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you! " Watson ran upstairs and shouted, "I heard you! " It was on the 10th of March, 1876. The telephone was invented. Look, this is the very first telephone! Then Alexander Graham Bell founded the Bell telephone company. He improved the design of the telephone and by 1886 more than 150 000 people had owned telephones in the United States.Bell is at the opening of the long-distance line from New York to Chicago in 1892. And this is an early wax cylinder phonograph, or grapho phone. The machine was created by Alexander Graham Bell in 1897. In 1880 the French Government awards Bell the Volta Prize of 50,000 francs for the invention of the electric speaking telephone. He used the prize money to set up the Volta Laboratory where he invented the photo phone  that transmitted sounds through light. This is the photo phone Alexander Graham Bell also had a strong interest in other scientific fields. It is situated in front of the Bell Telephone Building of Brantford, Ontario, Canada.
