The 2nd period 1600 – 1608All his famous tragedies, so called “Problem plays”, appeared. They are “Hamlet”, “Troilus & Cressida”,“All Well That Ends Well”, “Measure for Measure”, “Othello”, “King Lear”, “Macbeth”, ‘Antony & Cleopatra”, “Coriolanus”, “Timon of Athens”, “Pericles” HAMLET It’s one of the most famous Shakespear’s tragedies. It has been widely discussed especially for his famous soliloquy “To be or not to be; that is the question”.The plot was taken from old Danish chronicles. The 3rd period 1609 - 1612Shakespeare’s plays of this period, so called the Romantic Dramas, are tragicomedies. They are “Cymbeline”, “The Winter’s Tale”, “Tempest” & “Henry VIII”. The language of Shakespeare The metaphor is a brilliant device to show the character, that’s why his phrases are often twofold or threefold in design.e.g. She was beautiful, but she was a wicked woman & her beauty had no charm. Also he used shifting of words from one part of speech to another as well as making up new words by adding suffixes.e.g. He childed as I fathered. You – thou, thee, ye, you, thy, thine.Thou speakest/hast.He speaketh/hath.Spake you with him? What say you?If he come, sit we down, I think it be.Can you make no use of nothing? More nearer, more richer. Every tear he falls.“wrought” for “work”Even – just, still – always an – if meet – proper copper – coin, metal fast – nearly, hard, quick Shakespeare’s contribution to world literature Shakespeare was the first dramatist who mix tragedy & comedy. He was also a great master of plot. Many phrases, once caught by his audience, remained with the people & became a part of everyday language.
