Legends of an "unknown land of the south" (terra australis incognita) date back to Roman times and were commonplace in medieval geography.The name "Australia" was popularized by the 1814 work A Voyage to Terra Australis by the navigator Matthew Flinders, the first recorded person to circumnavigate Australia. Though its title reflected the British Admiralty’s usage. Etymology The first human habitation of Australia is estimated to have occurred between 42,000 and 48,000 years ago. These first Australians were possibly the ancestors of the current Indigenous Australians. Most of these people were hunter-gatherers. The State Emblem of the Australian Union is represented in the form of the board supported from both parties of the Kangaroo and an Ostrich-emu in a frame of blossoming branches eucalypti. The board is divided into six parts, each of which comprises an emblem of corresponding staff. The state of South Australia is presented by a bird- sorokopytom. Western Australia – a swan on rise. The state of Victoria is presented by constellation of the Southern Cross with an imperial crown, state of Queensland – dark blue the Maltese cross. The lion symbolizes the state of Tasmania, the New Wales is presented by a cross with a gold star. In the top part of the arms the seven-final star which six beams designate six staffs is placed, and the seventh beam symbolizes federal district Canberra. The arms in the present kind exists since 1912. The national flag of the Australian Union is dark blue. In the left top corner there is a flag of Great Britain – a symbol of an accessory of the Australian Union to British Commonwealth of the nations. Dark blue colour of the flag is a symbol of the ocean surrounding Australia. There is an image of constellation of the Southern cross in the middle of the flag. There are 6 stars on the flag symbolizing six states of the Australian Union. Seven beams of the star designate six states and the territory of Papya. The five-pointed star symbolizes federal district Canberra. The flag is approved in 1954. Australia has six states, two major mainland territories, and other minor territories. The states are New South Wales,Queensland,South Australia,Tasmania,Victoria, and Western Australia. The two major mainland territories are the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. Each state and territory has its own legislature: unicameral in the Northern Territory, the ACT, and Queensland, and bicameral in the remaining states. The states are sovereign, though subject to certain powers of the Commonwealth as defined by the Constitution. The Commonwealth of Australia is a constitutional democracy based on a federal division of powers. The form of government used in Australia is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. Queen Elizabeth II is the Queen of Australia. The Queen is represented by the Governor-General at federal level and by the Governors at state level. There are three branches of government: The legislature: the Commonwealth Parliament, comprising the Queen, the Senate, and the House of Representatives; the Queen is represented by the Governor-General, who by convention acts on the advice of his or her Ministers. The executive: the Federal Executive Council(the Governor-General as advised by the Executive Councillors); in practice, the councillors are the Prime Minister and Ministers of State. The judiciary: the High Court of Australia and other federal courts. Australia’s official language is English. Australian English does not differ significantly from other forms of English, although some expressions are unique to Australia. Most of the estimated 21.3 million Australians are descended from colonial-era settlers and post-Federation immigrants from Europe, with almost 90% of the population being of European descent. For generations, the vast majority of both colonial-era settlers and post-Federation immigrants came almost exclusively from the British Isles, and the people of Australia are still mainly of British or Irish ethnic origin.The Aborigines represent about 1,5 per cent of the population.Australia opens its doors to about 300,000 new migrants in 2008-09—its highest level since the Immigration Department was created after World War II.Australia is experiencing a demographic shift towards an older population, with more retirees and fewer people of working age. In 2004, the average age of the civilian population was 38.8 years Australia is situated in the Southern Hemisphere. The climate is varied, from tropical in the North to Temperate in the South-East. It has summer when we have winter. In the North-East tropical forests cover the coast. In the mountains of the South-East the snow lies for seven months of the year. In the centre of the continent and in the west more than 50% of the land is desert- dry and uninhabited. Australia’s best-knownanimals are thekangaroo, the koala and the dingo. There are 50 species of kangaroo. Some stand as tall as a man and some are as small as a cat. They be seen in many of the forests and parks. Sport plays an important part in Australian culture, assisted by a climate that favours outdoor activities; 23.5% Australians over the age of 15 regularly participate in organized sporting activities. At an international level, Australia has strong teams in cricket, field hockey, netball, rugby league, and rugby union, and it performs well in cycling, rowing, and swimming. Nationally, other popular sports include Australian rules football, horse racing, soccer, and motor racing. Australia has participated in every summer Olympic Games of the modern era, and every Commonwealth Games. Australians love to play and watch sports. In 1956 Olympic games were held in Melbourne. In the year 2000 Australia hosted the Olympics in Sydney.
