It is the sixth large country and the smallest continent. Australia lies between the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It has an area of about 8 million square kilometres. The Flag The flag includes the Southern Cross, Union Flag and Commonwealth Star.The small Union Jack represents the historical link with Britain, the large seven-pointed star represents the six States and Territories, and the small stars from the Southern Cross – a prominent feature of the southern hemisphere night sky. Government Australia uses a parliamentary system of government, it is a constitutional monarchy, ruled by Queen Elizabeth II. But the queen has little power in the Australian government. She serves mainly as a symbol of long historical tie between Great Britain and Australia. Australia is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations which is an association formed by Britain and some of its former colonies. The Commonwealth of Australia is a federal state. It has got six states: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania. Each state has its own state constitution, which divides the state's government into the same divisions of legislature, executive, and judiciary as the federal government. Administrative divisions Capital city The capital of the country is Canberra. The city became the capital in 1927. Canberra was specially planned as a capital. It is a quiet city. All the government buildings are situated there. The population of Canberra is about 300,000 people. Climate and Nature The continent of Australia is mostly a great plain with mountains in the east and south-east. Much of the land is a useless desert. There are many wild animals in Australia. Some of them are very famous , such as koalas, kangaroos and crocodiles. Climate and Nature There are 5 big cities in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. These cities are also the country's main ports. Population and cities Australian population is about 23 million people. The natives of the country are called Aborigines. Industry Australia is one of the world's developed countries. It is an industrial country. It has coal, nickel, zinc, gold. Several factories and plants work in the country. Australia is one of the most important producers of metals and minerals. It exports wool production, meat, fruit, sugar Tourist attractions Tourist attractions The most famous building in the country is the Sydney Opera House. Its roof looks like sails. It is a masterpiece of architecture. More than 5,000 people can visit concerts, operas, theatre performances and other events. Kakadu National Park is in Australia’s Northern Territory and covers about 20,000 square kilometres. It is a wetland with over 200 kinds of birds and 1,700 plant species.
