CHRISTMASThe Whole Story History Christmas in Britain Christmas in America HISTORY For most British families, this is the most important festival of the year, it combines the Christian celebrity of the birth of Christ, with the traditional festivities of winter. Different legends passed across the ages to make the present day Santa Claus. Immigrant settlers brought Father Christmas to the United States . Father’s name was gradually changed to Santa Claus, from the Dutch name for Father Christmas, which is Sinter Class. Although he has origins in Norse and pre-Christian mythology, Santa Claus took shape in the United States. Americans gave Santa Claus a white beard, dressed him in a red suit and made him a cheery old man with red cheeks and a twinkle in his eye. A Christmas tree is one of the main symbols of Christmas in most homes. Relatives and friends may join in trimming the tree with lights and tinsel. Presents are placed under the tree. On Christmas Eve families open their presents. Many children believe that Santa arrives on Christmas Eve in a sleigh pulled by reindeer and brings presents. Some children hang up stockings so Santa can fiil them with candy, fruits and other small gifts. Christmas in Britain Celebrations Shopping Crime Family Weather Food Celebrations Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present. It’s a big Christmas tree and it stands in Trafalgar Square. Central streets are beautifully decorated. In the afternoon English people may watch the Queen on television as she delivers her traditional Christmas message to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Most families decorate their homes with brightly-colored paper or holly and they usually have a Christmas tree in the corner of the front room, glittering with colored lights and decorations. For Christmas it is a must to spend it together, it means 3 days: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. There are things that just have to be done even if you hate it: play traditional board games, and eating Christmas cake. According to statistics, the number of family breakdowns doubles in the post-Christmas period as a result of stress, debt and over-consumption of alcohol. In most cases the weather is wet and gloomy. Weather There are some people in Britain who love horrible weather and these people are travel agents. People buy holidays for the summer or even next year during the festive season as it can work out significantly cheaper than buying closer to the time of travel. Food The most important meal is Christmas Dinner. The British often pull the cracker at the start of the meal, which contains a toy, a paper bat, or a joke. Typical meal is turkey with potatoes, sweet pudding, and Christmas cake, usually having covering ice. Christmas in America Celebrations Shopping Santa Claus Food Carols Celebrations Long ago, each child hung a stocking, or sock, over the fireplace. Santa entered down the chimney and left candy and presents inside the socks for the children. Today the tradition is carried on, but the socks are now larger, red sock shaped fabric bags still called stockings. Each child can’t wait to open his or her eyes to see what Santa has left in the stockings. People in the United States and Canada decorate their homes with Christmas trees, wreaths and ornaments. City streets are filled with colored lights; the sound of bells and Christmas carols can be heard everywhere. Shopping In the US many stores hold special sales, where things can be bought cheaply, on the day after Christmas. 12 days after Christmas is the time when people are supposed to take down their decorations and remove their Christmas trees Santa Claus Santa Claus, is called Santa, or Kriss Kingle in America is an imaginary old man in red clothes and with long white beard.He is thought to live at the North pole where he spends most of the year in his workshop making toys for children with the help of elves called in America “Brownies” There is a tradition that children should put a long sock called a Christmas stocking at the end of their bed so that Santa Claus will fill it with presents. Santa Claus is supposed to visit each house on Christmas Eve by climbing down the chimney. Food Americans bake special biscuits called Christmas cookies which they eat over the Christmas season from mid-December to the end of the year. Carols In many parts of the United States and Canada groups of people walk from house to house and sing Christmas carols. Some people give singers money or small gifts or invite them for a warm drink. Sometimes carol-singers can be heard on the streets as they collect money for charity. On Christmas Eve there are evening church services which everyone attends. They listen to readings from Bible and singing Christmas carols. On Christmas Day, there are other religious ceremonies at churches which families attend before they make their rounds to visit their friends and relatives.
