By train to WashingtonThe American passenger railroad is called Amtrak. We boarded the train at Pennsylvania Station. We arrived at the station an hour before departure. As far as I remember, we paid about a hundred dollars for our one-way tickets. I checked (in) Rich’s big suitcase for him. It was too big and heavy to take into the car as carry-on baggage. We chose a non-smoking car. That was because I had decided to give up smoking. After we were seated, the conductor collected tickets. He took our tickets and placed seat markers above our seats. I wondered what they were for. I saw our destination – Washington, D.C. – written on them. Rich said that we should take them anytime we left our seat!It took us just about three hours to reach Washington. Two hours and fifty minutes to be exact. On the train we had some pizza and cold drinks. Rich said he had always traveled by plane to Washington before. It was convenient because the airport in Washington was so close to downtown. But Union Station was literally within sight of the Capitol. 2. When did Richard and Victor arrive at the station? Why did they have to check in Richard’s suitcase? How had Rich traveled to Washington before? VI. Almost all people are fond of travelling. It is very interesting to see new places, another towns and countries. People may travel either for pleasure or on business. There are various methods of travelling. For me there is nothing like travel by air, it is more comfortable, more convenient and, of course, far quicker than any other method. There is none of the dust and dirt of a railway car journey, none of the trouble of changing from train to steamer and then to another train. 2. With a train you have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. From the comfortable seat of a railway carriage you have a splendid view of the whole country-side. If you are hungry, you can have a meal in the dining – car, and if a journey is a long one you can have a wonderful bed in a sleeper. 3. Many people like to travel by car. It is interesting too, because you can see many things in a short time, you can stop when and where you like, you do not have to buy tickets or carry your suitcases. 4. Travelling by ship is also very popular now. It is very pleasant to feel the deck of the ship under the feet, to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing in the face and hear the cry of the seagulls. 5. A very popular method of travelling is hiking. It is travelling on foot. Walking tours are very interesting. Hitch-hiking is very popular method of travelling among young people. But it is not so popular in our country as abroad. VII. Arms up! Clap! Clap!Arms down! Clap! Clap!Feet apart! Перевести на русский язык текст: «What kinds of cars shall we have in future?» What kinds of cars shall we have in future? What will the car of the future be like? It probably won’t be red. Our response to color isn’t always the same. If you want people to stop when they see a car in front of them, yellow is probably the best. When you go to for a drive in the car of tomorrow you will certainly know more about the road in front of you. Your car radio will tell you about the next corner before you can see it. It will pick this up from a wire under the road. When you stop quickly, the light that tells the man behind you to be careful will spared cross the car. At the same time a bag in front of you will fill up with air to stop you hitting your head on the window. What will the car of the future run on? Not petrol, which is dirty and noisy. In future we’ll probably have electric cars. As a rule the electric car can only make a short journey before going back to the garage. Or steam car. That top would be quiet and clean. But in England there is a farmer who has invented a car that runs on manure and he derived to London it every week.
