WELCOME TO LONDON Author: Ulivanova O.V. London, the capital of Great Britain, is a very old city. It is two hundred years old. London is one of the biggest cities in the world. About eight million people live here. It stands on the river Thames.The Thames is not a long river. It is three hundred and thirty kilometers long. The English people call it “The Father of London”. Tower Bridge Tower Bridge is the only Thames bridge which can be raised. The Tower of London is a very old building. It is nine hundred years old. In the early days of the history of England the English kings lived here. Then it was a prison where many people died. The Tower of London is a museum now. St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most beautiful churches in the world. It was built in the 17th century by Sir Christopher Wren. The Houses of Parliament are the seat of the British government. There is the Clock Tower and the clock in the Houses of Parliament. The clock has four faces and a very big loud bell. The large clock is known as “Big Ben”. The man in charge of building was Sir Benjamin Hall. This man was very tall and the workers and his friends called him Big Ben. So they called the bell Big Ben too. A double-decker bus Trafalgar Square is the geographical center of London. It was so named to commemorate Admiral Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar. The monument in the center of the square is called Nelson’s Column. It commemorates this national hero who died during the battle. On the north side of Trafalgar Square there is the National Gallery. It houses one of the finest art collections in the world. It includes paintings of the British, Italian, Spanish, French,Dutch, Flemish and other famous schools. Westminster Abbey is a royal church. Many English kings and queens and other famous people are buried there. The Abbey was founded in the 11th century. Buckingham Palace is the London home of the Queen. When the flag is flying on the top she is at home. The Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace takes place daily at 11:30 a. m. and lasts half an hour. The British Museum was founded in 1753. It is the largest museum in London. It has a wonderful collection of ancient manuscripts, coins and sculptures. It is a square in the central part of London. Piccadilly Circus is the meeting-point of six streets.
