The calendar has a separate compartment for each day of Advent. On each day, you open the compartment and take out the item that's inside. This item can vary; it can be a small treat or toy, or it can be a message of goodwill.
On Christmas Eve children leave a long sock or stocking at the end of their bed. Father Christmas comes down the chimney at night and bring them small presents. In the morning on Christmas day children find presents in their stockings.
