LISTEN TO THE TEXT AND BE READY TO FILL IN THE TABLE
Australia has nearly half a million species of plants and animals – one of the greatest varieties of any country in the world.
We have more than 20,000 species of plants in Australia, and 85 per cent of these are found only in Australia.
Australia also has about 200 species of frogs, of which about 93 per cent are found only in this country. Of 282 mammals species, 82 per cent do not occur anywhere else.
The world has only a few egg-laying mammals. The platypus is one of these and can be found only in Australia and New Guinea.
Australian plants provide homes and shelter for all the animals. If these homes or habitats are changed or destroyed, the survival of plants and animals is threatened.
This can happen in the sea as well as on the land.
There is a great variety of animal life in Australia`s waters. There are more than 4000 species of fish in the seas around Australia and thousands of species of selfish. Many are found on the Great Barrier Reef.
It is important for us to keep this rich variety of Australian plants and animals, to enjoy now and in the future. [1]
