Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
Arthur Conan Doyle, a prominent master of detective stories. was born in the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. His father, Charles E. Doyle, was an artist and architect by profession, but he worked as a clerk in an office. The father died young and the Doyle family was very poor.
Arthur`s mother was a very good story-teller and the boy remembered her fantastic stories all his life. The talent of story-telling Arthur inherited from his mother and it helped him as a writer. During his school years he read much, and he often told his school friends long and interesting stories, getting cakes and sweets.
After finishing school Conan Doyle became a student of the medical faculty in the University of Edinburgh. Being a student and after graduating from the University he went as a ship`s doctor to the Arctic and to Western Africa.
In 1887 Conan Doyle published his detective story "A Study in Scarlet". Its main characters were Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, and they became the most popular characters of a great many of Conan Doyle`s stories.Working in 1889 (one thousand eight hundred eighty nine) «„The White Company“» and «The Sign of Four»In the period between 1889 (one thousand eight hundred eighty nine) and 1890 (one thousand eight hundred and ninetieth) Doyle writes a play in three acts «Angels of Darkness» (in the story «A Study in Scarlet»). The main character in it is doctor Watson. Holmes it's not even mentioned.
"A Scandal in Bohemia" opened a collection of detective stories under the title "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". The story was published in 1891 and soon after that Baker Street became the well-known address of Sherlock Holmes. In 1902 one of Conan Doyle`s best stories "The Hound of the Baskervilles" was published.Early in 1895 (one thousand eight hundred ninety five) in «The Strand» magazine begins publication of the first stories from «The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard» and immediately the magazine increases the number of subscribers
Conan Doyle gave up his medical work and devoted all his life to his literary activity. He also travelled much. The book written by him, 1902 (one thousand and ninety second) «The Great Boer War» is five hundred pages of the chronicle, published in October, 1900 (one thousand nine hundred), was a masterpiece of military scholarship. He visited Europe, the USA and Egypt.Besides detective stories, Conan Doyle also wrote historical novels, war books and an anticolonial book about the Belgian Congo. His two fantastic stories "The Lost World"(1912) and "The Poisoned Belt"(1913) were quite successful.
All his life Conan Doyle liked sports; he skied. played golf and went in for boxing. He died in 1930, but after his death the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, together with his friend Dr. Watson, continued to be among the favorite characters of English literature.He is buried in the cemetery Minstead Hampshire.
