New York New YorkNew York is the largest city in the USA and the biggest seaport. It is the business centre of the United States. New York is situated in the mouth of the Hudson river. In comparison with such ancient historical cities as, say, Rome, London, Moscow or Paris, New York is quite young. It was founded in 1613 by Dutch settlers. The five boroughs of New York City:1: Manhattan 2: Brooklyn 3: Queens4: The Bronx 5: Staten IslandThere are five districts in the city: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Richmond. Manhattan is the central and the oldest part of the city. It is the district of business and finance. It is here in Wall Street that many business offices, banks and the world famous New York stock exchange are situated. The New York stock exchange dominates business life of many countries.The five boroughs New York attracts people from all over the world. If you are crossing New York City by subway, look at the newspapers other people around read. One person is reading a newspaper in Spanish, another in Chinese, others in Arabic, Russian, Italian and French and so on.Modern Babylon The Statue of LibertyThe Statue of Liberty, which is on Liberty Island, was a present from France in 1876 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of American independence. This statue and a few 18th and 19th century churches, hospitals, newspaper offices and other buildings are the only examples of "old" architecture in New York. Wherever your eyes travel, everywhere you can see sky-scrapers. St. Patrick's CathedralThe neo-Gothic Cathedral of St. Patrick is the largest catholic church in the United States. Despite its tall spires it is dwarfed by the many neighboring midtown skyscrapers. The General Grant National MemorialThe General Grant National Memorial, better known as Grant's Tomb, overlooks the Hudson River from the Morningside Heights district of Manhattan. For lovers of both architecture and Civil War history, it's a must-see while in New York City. Lincoln CenterIn New York City, the cultural capital of the United States, there stands a complex that is dedicated to the finest in the world of music and the arts... Lincoln Center. Museum of Natural HistoryOne of New York City's most-visited family attractions, the American Museum of Natural History has been enthralling guests since its opening in 1871. Cathedral of St. John the DivineIn 1887, the Episcopalians decided to build a grand cathedral in New York City dedicated to St. John the Divine. It isn't quite finished yet! The Brooklyn BridgeThe Brooklyn Bridge, built between 1869 and 1883, connects Manhattan with New York's most populous borough, Brooklyn. The bridge is one of the most famous and magnificent landmarks in New York City. Empire State BuildingMore than any other building in the world, the Empire State Building embodies the ambition of humans to build towers that reach for the skies. The skyscraper is probably New York's best known building and can be seen on many postcards. The headquarters of the United NationsThe headquarters of the United Nations in New York were developed by an international team of architects. The main building, the Secretariat, was one of the city's first skyscrapers in International Style. Wall StreetWall Street is one of the world's most famous streets. Historically known as the center of New York's financial district, Wall Street is often associated with wealth and ambition in America. Rockefeller CenterRockefeller Center, originally known as Radio City, is a complex of buildings developed in the midst of the Great Depression. Initially the complex consisted of fourteen buildings, the 70-story RCA building being the tallest. At the beginning of the 17th century only the wigwams of the Iroquois stood there. In 1626 the Dutch Governor, Peter Minuit, concluded with them what American business experts call «the most profitable commercial deal in the U.S. history». With several bottles of gin and a handful of trinkets that cost twenty-four dollars, he bought a large island from the simple-hearted, trusting Indians. Later the Indians named the island Manhatta (present-day Manhattan, the main borough of New York, which in Iroquois means: “They cheated us”.“They cheated us” Green-Wood CemeteryGreen-Wood is a large cemetery in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn MuseumThe Brooklyn Museum is considered one of the best art institutions in the United States. The Guggenheim MuseumThe Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue is home to an important collection of modern art. Even if you're not into art, the building housing the art is worth a visit on its own. It was the last completed project by Frank Lloyd Wright before he died in 1959. Columbia UniversityThe oldest university in New York and the fifth oldest in the United States, Columbia University was founded as an Anglican institution in 1754. The Chrysler BuildingOne of New York City's finest office buildings, the Chrysler Building was designed as a tribute to the booming automotive industry. Built in 1930, it was the world's tallest skyscraper at the time, until the Empire State Building claimed the spot just months later. Central ParkCentral Park spans two and a half miles from 59th Street to 110th Street and half a mile from Fifth Avenue to Eighth Avenue and was the first urban landscaped park in the United States. Originally conceived in the salons of wealthy New Yorkers in the early 1850's, the park project spanned more than a decade and cost the city ten million dollars.
