The action of most Chekhov’s stories takes place in the province. Perhaps that’s why everybody thinks that the town of Chekov’s childhood was an ordinary Russian provincial one. But Taganrog was not such town. A. Chudakov.
Taganrog during A.P. Chekov’s life…130 years ago Taganrog was a prospering town in the south of Russia. It was a big port on the Azov seaside and it had a various commerce with a lot of foreign states.
The Population of Taganrog was various: the Russians lived next to the Ukrainians, the Jews, the Armenians, the Turks and many others.
In Taganrog Anthon Pavlovich Chekhov lived approximately a half of his life. Here his personal essence and the artist’s soul was form and formed.
Our talent is given to us by our father but our sone is from our mother A.P. Chekhov.

Anthon Pavlovich Chekhov’s life during his schooling at the gymnasium.The Taganrog classical gymnasium for men founded in 1806 was one of the oldest educational institution in the south of Russia.The years of Chekhov’s schooling at the gymnasium (1867-1879) are the years of his childhood, adolescence and youth. The student Antosha took an active part in the manuscript magazine, placing his poems and satirical plays in it.
Chekov studied not successfully because of his work after school: the work at his father’s shop, his singing at the choir, etc.He reminded this part of his life with a great sadness: “…when I together with my two brothers sang trio in the church…everyone was looking at us with tender emotion and envied to our parents, but we felt like little slaves at that time”.
One’s life must be put in such conditions to make labour to be necessary. Clean and pleasant life can’t exist without labour. A.P. Chekhov.
When Anthon was fifteen his elder brothers went for studying to Moscow. Pavel Egorovich’s commercial business became worse and worse. The Chekhov’s got short of money. Often the children heard the horrible what “the debt's pit”. Pavel Egorovich decided to escape the prison going away to Moscow. Some time later Evgenia Yakovlevna having taken her younger children went to her husband. At the age of 16 Anthon had to decide a difficult problem: how to exist in Taganrog until his graduating the gymnasium.

Often Anthon was hungry, his clothes were worn out, he had to be economical to save money for his payment for schooling and to send money to his mother but he was happy to some extent because he was free for the first time in his life. For his father’s tyranny during his childhood Chekhov considered that the main condition for happiness is Freedom.
