Queen Elizabeth II
Early life Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was born in London on April, 21 1926, first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, subsequently King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Her sister Margaret was born 4 years later. Five weeks later she was christened in the chapel of Buckingham Palace and was given the names Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. Elizabeth was named after her mother, great-grandmother Queen Alexandra, and grandmother Queen Mary,[3] and was called "Lilibet" by her close family. Marriage At the age of 13 she met 18 year old Prince Philip, her distant cousin. They fell in love and wanted to get married but her father wanted to make sure it was real and not just because this was the first person she loved. Before they got married Prince Philip renounced his royal title as a Prince of Greece and Denmark, became a British subject, and adopted the surname of his uncle "Louis Mountbatten" . Marriage They got married on November 20, 1947. They have three sons, Charles Philip Arthur George, Andrew Albert Christian Edward , and Edward Anthony Richard Louis , and a daughter Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise. ReignSuccessionThe coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, 2 June 1953. Prince Philip swears his allegiance to his wife and newly crowned sovereign. SuccessionDespite the death of the Queen's grandmother Queen Mary on 24 March 1953, the Queen's coronation went ahead in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953, in accordance with Mary's wishes. The entire ceremony, save for the anointing and communion, was televised throughout the Commonwealth, and watched by an estimated twenty million people in Britain, with twelve million more listening on the radio. 1990In 1991, Queen Elizabeth became the first British monarch to address a joint session of the United States Congress. The following year, she attempted to save the failing marriage of her eldest son, Charles, by counseling him and his wife, Diana, Princess of Wales, to patch up their differences. She was unsuccessful, and the couple formally separated. TragedyA year after the divorce, Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris on 31 August 1997. At the time, the Queen was on holiday at Balmoral with her son and grandchildren. In their grief, Diana's two sons wanted to attend church, and so their grandparents took them that morning. For five days, the Queen and the Duke shielded their grandsons from the ensuing press interest by keeping them at Balmoral where they could grieve in private. TragedyThe royal family's seclusion caused public dismay. Pressured by her family, friends, the new British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and public reaction, the Queen agreed to broadcast live to the world on 5 September. In it, she expressed admiration for Diana, and her feelings "as a grandmother" for Princes William and Harry. ReignDespite the controversies and scandals surrounding her children and other members of the royal family, she remains a respected head of state. In 2002, Elizabeth celebrated her golden jubilee (50 years on the throne) and in 2006 her 80th birthday.
