Christmas Day, December 25, is the most popular holiday in Great Britain.
Christmas is a religious holiday, when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The Christmas story comes from the Bible. An Angel appeared to shepherds and told them that a Savior had been born to Mary and Joseph in a stable in Bethlehem. The Wise Men (the Magi) followed a star until it led them to Jesus. The Wise Men gave Jesus many gifts. So it is a tradition to give presents on Christmas Day. Another tradition is to put a star on the top of Christmas Tree. Traditionally people sing Christmas songs on this day. They are called carols. In Russia this word means “хоралы“. People buy and decorate the Christmas tree. They decorate it with toys, candles, balls, lights, garlands and put a golden star on the top. The most beautiful Christmas tree is in the centre of London in Trafalgar Square. This is a present from the people of Norway to people of Great Britain. All houses are beautifully decorated. Holly and mistletoe are used to decorate the house. They put branches of holly and mistletoe over the doors. The young people have a chance to kiss the girl under holly and mistletoe. It is said that the girl who was not kissed under it at Christmas would not get married that year. Every English family sends and receives many Christmas Cards. Both Russia and the United Kingdom are Christian countries, so the main Christian holidays in our countries are the same: Christmas and Easter, although in Russia we celebrate these holidays 13 days later than in Britain. Russians celebrate Christmas on 7th January, while the English celebrate it on 25th December. Until 1918, Russia had the Julian calendar, whilst the majority of European countries had adopted the Gregorian calendar long before. By this time the accumulated difference between the calendars was 13 days. Thus, the same holiday had different dates in Europe and in Russia. The Russian state took the decision to join the Gregorian system of chronology in 1918. The Russian Orthodox Church, however, stuck to the so-called “old style” (the Julian calendar), hence the different dates. Why do we celebrate Christian holidays 13 days later? Santa Claus travels on a sleigh pulled by deer that can fly. The well-know image of Santa Claus was invented by Coca-Cola. The name ‘Santa Claus’ comes from the Dutch Sinter Klaus, short for Sinter Nicholas or Saint Nicholas. On Christmas Eve children hang their Christmas stockings on their beds or near fire place. A Christmas stocking is not a real stoking. It is big and beautifully decorated. Children put their Christmas stockings on their beds or near the mantelpiece. Children believe that Santa Claus will come down the chimney and fill the stockings with presents. A carrot for the deer is usually left on the mantelpiece. People celebrate Christmas Day with a great Christmas dinner. The traditional dessert is Christmas pudding. Traditionally a coin is put into the pudding. It brings luck to a person who finds it.
