Christmas DinnerThe typical meal consists of turkey with potatoes and other vegetables such as carrots and sprouts.It is followed by Christmas pudding – a sweet pudding containing a lot of dried fruit and often covered with burning brandy.The cranberry sauce, pumpkin, chocolate cream, Christmas pies follow the dinner.

Christmas TreeThe custom of a Christmas tree began in Germany, in the first half of the 700s.It is believed that Martin Luther first added lighted candles to a tree.From Germany the custom spread to other parts of Western Europe.It was popularized in England in the 19th century, by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s German husband.

“ Shopping Season”Because people give each other presents, in the days and weeks before Christmas the shops become very busy. People often spend a lot of money on gifts. Many people enjoy this but feel that Christmas has become too much of business and so has lost its meaning. Boxing DayIn Britain, the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day and is also a public holiday.A lot of sports take place on Boxing Day and many people now spend time watching sport on TV.They go to their friends and relatives.

Twelve Days of Christmasare twelve days following Christmas.The 12 days is the chief time for choosing a Mock King to rule for a festive space.In the 12th Night cake there is usually a silver ring or a coin but an older tradition demands a bean.The bean is a powerfully magical thing enclosing within itself a symbol of the female principle.
