Only when all the rivers have run dry and all the fish in the sea have died only when all the rainforests have been burnt down and there is no food for the animals only when all the blue skies have been filled with smoke and the cities of the world have choked will the white man understand that it’s too late to save the earth. Ecology is a science which studies relationship between all forms of life on our planet with its environment. This word came from the Greek “oikos” which means “home”. This idea of home includes the whole planet of ours; it’s population, the Nature, animals, birds, fish, insects, all other living beings and even the atmosphere around our planet. Say what problem each picture ilustrates. Match the problem and the picture. For example: I think picture 1 shows… I think picture 1 shows… The Aral Sea disappears into a Toxic Dust CloudOnce the world’s fourth-largest lake, approximately the size of Ireland, the Aral Sea is now a salty desert wasteland. The disappearance of the Aral Sea is considered “one of the planet’s worst environmental disasters”. The sea began shrinking in the 1960s when the Soviets diverted water to boost cotton production. Lost along with the wildlife-teeming waters was the lucrative fishing industry. The Aral Sea’s ecosystem has been almost completely destroyed. The Aral’s soil is also highly contaminated with toxic chemicals from weapon testing, pesticides, fertilizer run-off and industrial projects. The toxic salty sand left behind causes health problems as it is inhaled when it rises in the air with the winds. People in the area have high rates of cancer, lung diseases, tuberculosis, digestive, liver problems, kidney diseases and eye disorders. The area also has a high child mortality rate. What was the size of the Aral sea?
When did the sea begin shrinking?
What causes health problems?
What diseases have high rates in the area? Answer the questions. Use the phrases in the box and the fact file to discuss, as in the example.
