An angel appeared to Shepherds and told them about the birth of the Savior. The Shepherds went to the Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus and gave him gifts. Myrrh Religious holiday Non-religious customs: Santa Claus Santa is portrayed as a cheerful fat man with a long white beard, who wears a short, red and white suit and says: “Ho! Ho! Ho! Rudolph Santa has nine reindeer, but his favourite one is Rudolph. It has a large red nose that glows. Santa Claus. Santa travels in a magical sleigh that flies through the air pulled by nine reindeer. Rudolph’s nose, that glows, helps to light the darkness. The sleigh lands on the roof of a house ; Santa goes down the chimney and enters the house through the fireplace. Then he leaves presents for children. Magical sleigh. Fireplace. Giving Gifts There is a tradition to send Christmas cards. Common messages are: “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Holidays”, “Season’s Greetings”… Gifts are wrapped in colored paper and placed under the Christmas tree. Special Christmas stockings may be hung near the fireplace and be filled with small gifts. Christmas tree is usually decorated with strings of lights, tinsel and ornaments Traditional Christmas Foods and Drinks Traditional Christmas foods and drinks include eggnog ( a drink made from cream, milk, sugar, eggs and rum or brandy), cookies, desserts, ham, potatoes, salads and fruitcakes. One tradition is to go caroling – going to people’s homes, standing outside their door and singing carols for them. Christmas songs can be religious and secular.
