Treat Others As You Would Like
To Be Treated
(The Golden Rule of Behaviour)
Geoffrey Chaucer
Three Young Men, Death and a Bag of Gold
Id like to tell you an amusing story. The story is
about three young men who were
very fond of gold.
Three young men were sitting in an inn. They
were making merry
.
They drank a lot of wine. Suddenly they heard some
noise. They
looked out of
the
window. They saw some people. The people were carry
ing a coffin. The friends
wanted to know the name of the dead man.
They wanted the innkeeper to tell them the name of
the dead man.
The innkeeper
told them
the name of the dead man. It was the name of their
friend. The three young men
were shocked
. They
couldnt believe their ears.
The
innkeeper
was not surprised
. He told the friends that every day Death killed
young and old in the village. The innkeeper added t
hat he thought Death lived in
that village.
Our three young friends
got drunk
. They thought Death really lived in the village.
They
made up their mind
to go to the village and find Death there. They dec
ided
to kill Death.
So they went to the village to find and kill Death.
They
were not afraid of
Death.
They decided to be brothers and defend
each other
.
Soon they met a very old man. They asked the old ma
n where they could find
Death. The old man pointed to the wood. The old man
wanted the young men to go
there. He said that Death was under an old oak.
The tree young men rushed to the wood. Soon they sa
w a very large old oak. When
they
came up
to
the oak, they saw a bag. The bag
was full of
gold coins. They
couldnt believe their eyes
.
Anyway, the friends
were
very
glad to
get so much gold. They forgot about
Death.
2
At first, they decided to
divide
the gold
into
three parts. Then they
changed their
mind
The friends decided to stay at the oak till night.
They didnt want people to ask them questions about
the gold.
Soon they
got hungry.
So the youngest man went to town to buy some food t
o eat.
The other two remained under the oak with the gold
coins.
The two young men were sitting under the oak. They
were waiting
for
their friend.
Suddenly they
had an idea
. They
made up their mind
to kill their friend
with
their
knives. They
did want
to divide the gold into two parts.
Anyway,
they
were
satisfied with
their plan.
The youngest friend
had an idea
, too. Of course, he wanted to get the bag of gold
for himself
. He didnt want to divide the gold into three part
s.
It occurred to him
that he would poison them.
He went to a man who sold poison to kill rats.
First,
he bought some poison from
him.
Second,
he bought some meat, bread and three bottles of wi
ne.
After that
he
put some poison into two bottles of wine.
Actually,
he
was
very
satisfied with
his
plan. When everything
was ready
, he hurried to the old oak
to join
his friends.
He
was looking forward to
get
ting
all the gold
for himself.
When he
reached the oak,
the two friends
were waiting for
him with their knives
ready. They killed him
at once
.
After that
they opened the bottles and drank the
wine. Soon they were dead, too.
This is how the three young men found Death.
I liked the story very much.
Anyway,
I think
its worth reading.
The story
teaches us
how important it is to follow the Golden Rule of B
ehaviour
which says:
Treat Others As You Would Like To Be Treated
The three young men were selfish and greedy.
Moreover,
they were not
real friends. True friends try to help each other,
they share happiness and
trouble and never make plans how to cheat or kill e
ach other.
I think
it was
their greediness
that
made them kill each other.
If they were true friends, they would not die.
If they were not greedy, they would become rich bec
ause they could
divide the gold coins into three parts.
To sum up,
if you want to be safe, sound and happy, just
treat others
as you would like to be treated.

Remember the golden rules of behaviour:
"Treat Others As You Would Like To Be
Treated."
That is the Golden Rule of Behaviour.
And here are some of the best expressions of The Go
lden Rule in modern English.
1. "Do unto others as you would have them do unt
o
you."
2. "Treat others as you would like to be treated
."
3. "Treat other people the way you would like to
be
treated."
4. "Treat other people the way you want to be
treated."
5. "Whatever you want people to do to you, do th
at
to them."
