Students read the text quickly to check their ideas. Encourage students not to look up every unknown word but just to note down any new words they feel are important. Checkanswers.
1 Mobile phones are one of the most useful inventions of the last 50 years, but not everything that is said about them is good. Mobiles are frequently blamed for a number of things, from thumb injuries and headaches to house fires. One theory even blames mobile phones for the disappearance of bees!
2 The theory is that the bees' navigation systems are damaged by the radiation that is given off by mobile phones. Bees have a built-in system a bit like GPS and this helps them find their way back to their hive. But recently thousands of bees have failed to find their way home.
It is believed they are dying far from their hives. 4 Practice
Reading and speaking In passive sentences, the thing receiving the action is the subject of the sentence and the thing doing the action is optionally included near the end of the sentence. You can use the passive form if you think that the thing receiving the action is more important or should be emphasized. Tigers can be dangerous, of course. But do we want to live in a world without these beautiful wild animals? 4 Practice
Reading and speaking 1Why the tigers are in danger?
2 Who or what is the first danger to animals?
3 How can we help to survive for animal?
4 Do we need the tigers?
This has happened for two reasons. There
are more and more people in the world every
year. Roads, villages, farms, towns and cities
nave been built almost everywhere. So there
are fewer wild places and large forests where
tigers can live and find food. The other reason
is hunting. Tigers have always been killed by
hunters and farmers, but in the last 100 years
guns have become common. So tigers have been killed easily. 5 Evaluation Read the text Then write Г (true), Ғ (false) or ?

2 What do you think of all the photos that people say they have taken of the Loch Ness Monster?
3 Do you believe there is a monster in the lake?
4 If there is a monster in the lake, how do you think scientists could try to find it?
BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Loch Ness Monster is a sea animal that some people claim lives in Loch Ness, a lake in Scotland. The famous photograph of the monster from 1934 was revealed to be fake in 1994. There have been several searches of the lake, most recently in 2001, which have found nothing.
Bigfoot: Also known as Sasquatch, Bigfoot is an ape-like creature which has been sighted in the north-west region of the United States. It is reported as being between 1.8m and 3m tall and covered in dark brown hair. Bigfoot footprints have been found which measure 60 cm long by 20cm wide. Scientists do not believe in the existence of Bigfoot and say that there would need to be a large number of these creatures to maintain the breeding population.
Conspiracy theories are the beliefs that historical or current events are the result of secret deliberate planning by official organisations, e.g. usually government bodies. The moon landings are a common source of conspiracy theories, (See Background Information for Exercise 4).
John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) was the
35th president of the USA (1961-1963). At 43, he was the youngest man in American history to be elected President. He was shot in his car in Dallas, Texas. A man was charged with his murder but this man was also shot and he died before he went to court Kennedy’s death is probably the most famous incident in the world linked to conspiracy theories. There are theories that he was killed by many different people including the Russian secret service, the Italian mafia, the American government and the Cuban government. 10

Historians have always wondered when and where man first learned to keep horses for food, milk and transport. The question is important because horse transport changed the world’s early history.
Archaeologists believe they have found the answer here in Kazakhstan. The strongest proof was found in 2009 by a team of archaeologists from the British University of Exeter. They wrote about it in the international journal Science.
The archaeologists found a lot of very ancient horse bones and teeth in the Botai region of northern Kazakhstan. Most of the horses’ side-teeth were damaged or smaller than usual. This showed that the horses must have worn bits in their mouths. This means that the Botai people must have ridden them or used them for pulling or carrying things.
Scientific tests showed that these bones and teeth were about 5,500 years old.
The archaeologists also found many broken pots of the same age. Scientists examined the pots and did chemical tests. 1689101931034

Presenter: Good morning everyone. This morning we re continuing our series about mysterious places, and today our mysterious place isMesa Verde. And to tell us about it, we’ve invited Professor Wilkes, from the Open University.
Good morning Professor Wilkes.
Professor: Good morning.
Presenter: So, to begin with, could you tell us where Mesa Verde is?
Professor: Yes. Mesa Verde is part of a national park, which is also called Mesa Verde, and it’s in the state of Colorado in the United States.
Presenter: And what exactly is it?
Professor: Well, Mesa Verde is basically a collection of houses and other buildings that were built in caves or in other parts of a rock wall by a tribe of people called the Anasazi.
Presenter: The Anasazi? How do you spell that? Professor: Yes - A-N-A-S-A-Z-l. The name means the ancient ones’ in the Navajo language. Now, the Mesa Verde houses were built in around 1200 AD - that is, just over eight hundred years ago.
The Anasazi lived in these rock and cave houses for about a hundred years.
Presenter: Really, but, why build houses in the rock?
Why not build your homes on flat land?
Professor: Well, frankly, we don’t know for sure, but it s probable that living in the rock made the Anasazi feelsafer. Anyway, it’s clear that by 1300, the buildings at Mesa Verde were empty.
Presenter: And do we know why the Anasazi left? 10

Ex.4a. What examples can you think of where people claim to have seen aliens or strange creatures?
Ex.4b. Answer the questions with a partner.
1 Why is Loch Ness famous?
