I think that the quotation “One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way” by Frank Smith means that it is easier to be more successful in our life, knowing more than one language.
It is a well known fact, that now English is an international language of diplomacy, business, science, technology, banking, medicine, aviation and so on, by the way it’s a native language for more than 350 million people.
Nowadays it’s very difficult to find a good job or to get any promotion if you know only your native language. In our fast-moving world it’s necessary to know at least one foreign language. If you think a bit, you will probably agree that there are many careers that require a second language. And in accepting one of these, the person obviously is opening a new door in their future life. Languages have a way of doing it. They broaden your horizons and you truly become more open-minded and more understanding of so many things. You see many things from a different perspective.
But if you know, for example Chinese, it will help you to open every door along the way, because Chinese is the most widely spoken and fastest growing language in the world. Moreover, Chinese is quickly becoming the language of business, as we can see a lot of products from China and it’s necessary for different factories to have someone, who knows Chinese, to make business deals. Nowadays all companies want their workers to know at least English. In some international companies, every person has to know two foreign languages well.
So, the biggest advantage of knowing two languages is a good job, with a good salary. But if you have enough money, you can afford a luxury life, so you will be a successful person and that’s the second advantage. If you are a successful person, you have a lot of influential and useful friends, so every door is opened to you. Moreover, knowing two languages gives you an opportunity to improve friendship and maybe add smth to our knowledge around the world. Nowadays, many people have a wider friendship around the world. So, learning languages is an important way to communicate with friends from other countries and to learn more about traditions of different countries.
