Oxford University is one of the two oldest, most prestigious and most aristocratic British universities. It was created in 1176.Over 130 nationalities are represented among students. Oxford consists of 38 self-governing colleges:28 colleges for men,5 colleges for women,5 colleges for both men and women.Each college has its own hall, chapel and library.The university has about 20,000 students. Most of the colleges are built around courtyards, called quads, with lawns in the centre. Christ Church College The largest of Oxford University’s colleges is Christ Church, founded in 1525. This is Tudor dining Hall at Christ Church College. This hall is the setting for some of the scenes in the Harry Porter films. Oxford houses the Bodleian Library. It is one of the most important libraries in the world with its 3,000,000 books and 50,000 manuscripts. There is the Radcliffe Camera, a classical rotunda now used as a reading-room for the Bodleian. The cost of studies in the university is rather high. Students have to pay for using libraries and laboratories, as for taking exams. A characteristic feature of Oxford is that it keeps to the traditions of the past (the Middle Ages). All the students wear long black gowns and students’ caps. Without his or her gown no student is allowed to call on a tutor, to have dinner in the college dining-room or attend a lecture. Oxford has been associated with many of the greatest names in British history. Many eminent world-known scholars and scientists have been educated at Oxford. It is 80 km far from London. Cambridge consists of 31 colleges:3 colleges for women,28 colleges for both men and women. In old times students of Cambridge were not allowed to play games , sing, hunt, fish, dance. They wore special dark clothes and “squares”, the academic caps, they wear them nowadays.

A young girl who liked (play) the piano found out that a young critic Bernard Shaw would be (invite) to a party. The girl was fond of (meet) famous people. She learned that most of all Shaw loved (be) in a good company and (listen) to good music. The girl did not have a good voice so (sing) was out of the question. She decided to please Shaw by (choose) some lovely piece of music and (play) it at the party. She enjoyed ( get) ready for the event and finally she left confident. Almost all the guests ( arrive) and the girl had been playing the piano for half an hour when a young man (enter ) the room. He was introduced to everybody as Bernard Shaw. The girl looked at him with admiration. She continued (play) the piano. Bernard Shaw kept (pay) no attention to the girl and started (talk) with one of the guests. The young girl disliked (be) ignored. Attracting Shaw`s attention was her dream, but she did not know how to do it. Finally she turned to Shaw and said loudly:" Excuse me, I have heard that you are fond of (listen) to good music.""I am," answered Bernard Shaw, "but never mind!
