The First Day of the Year
Today is the first of January and I am going to give you some seasonal words or phrases.-объяснить вам слова и фразы, относящиеся к этому празднику
The first seasonal phrase is the name of today. (1) On this day people begin to use a calendar. It shows you the date.
Clocks and watches (часы) are some other words connected (связанный)with the idea of the passing time. (2) On New Year's Day many people make resolutions. (3) My father has made a New Year resolution: he is not going to smoke so much. I'm afraid he breaks his New Year resolution very early. So do most people. But all the same it is a good thing to make resolutions!
In England we do not celebrate New Year's Day as a holiday, but in Scotland it is a holiday. But all over Britain people celebrate evening before New Year's Day, that is, New Year's Eve. We hold dances and parties. (4) We call staying up and listening for the clock to strike twelve "seeing the New Year in".
When the clock has struck midnight, the Church bells are rung to welcome the New Year. And when the clock strikes twelve people wish one another "A Happy New Year". There is always a big crowd in London round St. Paul's Cathedral waiting to see the New Year in. (5) It's "Auld Lang Syne". It comes from Scotland. At parties people join hands in a circle as they sing this song.
