«Going on regular walks is one of the most powerful and easiest changes you can make to your health and wellbeing»
Dr. William Bird
The human foot has 26 bones in it, but how many of us use them? From Hall’s experience, not many. Yet she believes walking actively – rather than the passive trudge witnessed all around us – is just as good exercise as going for a run. Her mission is to make walking “sexy, aspirational, joyful and dynamic.”
If you’re not convinced by the transformative power of moderate exercise consider this: a recent study from the University of Cambridge found that a brisk 20-minute daily walk reduces an individual’s risk of early death by 25 per cent. While a major study from the Mayo Clinic demonstrated that walking for just half an hour a day can dramatically reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s, depression, and Type 2 diabetes.
Given that the UK is one of the least physically active countries in the world, with one in four people doing less than 30 minutes of exercise a week, and Public Health England warning that one in 10 people will be at risk of diabetes by 2035, now is the time to get moving. Unlike the latest gym fad, walking is something we all do, and are unlikely to give up once January is over.
“Walking is great because it’s for all ages and phases of life,” says Hall. “We’re all short on time, and even if we get to the gym three times a week, what about all the other hours?”
She isn’t alone in advocating the life-changing power of going for a walk. Dr William Bird was one of the first GPs in the country to prescribe walking to his patients. He says: “Going on regular walks is one of the most powerful and easiest changes you can make to your health and wellbeing.” He has helped develop initiatives such as Health Walks, Green Gyms and Beat the Street which have got more than three million people in the UK moving.
