Gateshead Millennium BridgeOriginated by:Bermeshev Semyon,Year 11 The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is one of the most famous bridges that spans the River Tyne in England. It was constructed in 2001. This bridge is used only by pedestrians and cyclists. It was designed by architects Chris Wilkinson and Jim Eyre of «Wilkinson Eyre». Their project was chosen by the government of Gateshead as the most suitable for this area. The construction of the bridge is made of steel. It is the first tilt bridge in the world. The basis includes two steel arches – tilt and horizontal. When ship is too tall to go under the bridge, arches turn in 40 degrees and stay in this position for several minutes. That is the reason why it is called «Winking Eye Bridge» Total length of this bridge is 126 m. It weights 850 tn. Arches are suspended 25 m above the river. This huge construction was lifted by the Asian Hercules,  one of the world's largest floating cranes. Nevertheless, arches turn about 200 times a year. I think, the main advantage is that huge parts of this bridge move in such difficult and interesting way. It makes this construction one of the most beautiful modern bridges in the world.
