ChristmasOn the 25th of December there is the greatest religious holiday for all people in Great Britain – Christmas. People send X-mas cards to their friends and relatives. People buy a Christmas tree and decorate it with toys, coloured balls and lights. Children wake up early to find stockings full of small presents from Santa Claus on their beds. New YearNew Year’s Eve all British celebrate on the 31st of December. Most people meet their friends and relatives. At midnight they sing New Year songs and wish happy New Year each other. St. Valentine’s DaySt. Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14th of February. It is started over 2 000 years ago and considered to be a holiday for lovers. On this day boys and girls, sweethearts and lovers, husbands and wives exchange greetings of affection. People send each other valentine cards without signing or just write there “be my Valentine” or “From your Valentine”. Usually these cards are made in form of a heart. Mother’s dayThe second Sunday in May is called in the UK Mother’s Day. It is a very lovely celebration. On this day children give their mothers flowers, little nice presents, greeting cards to show them love. Some children try to do their best to help their mothers about the house. The 17th of March is a national holiday in Ireland – St. Patrick’s day. On that day people wear a shamrock. A shamrock is a plant with three leaves. It is the national symbol of Ireland. St. Patrick was a man who had wonderful power. He cleared Ireland of snakes. April Fool’s DayApril Fool’s Day is on the 1st of April. English children like this day very much. They play jokes and tricks on other people, even on teachers. Father’s Day  In June the English people celebrate Father’s Day. On that day children send cards and give presents to their father’s. In Great Britain children don’t go to school on the 1st of September.They begin to study on the second Tuesday of September. HalloweenHalloween is a spooky but funny holiday. It is celebrated on the 31st of October. Its celebration includes wearing masks and costumes, going from house to house, collecting money and sweets, “trick or treat”. Ancient Halloween custom is making jack-o’-lanterns from pumpkins.   Children like Haloween parties, they put on witch’s and  ghost’s dresses. On the 5th of November 1605 Guy Fawkes and his friends put a bomb under the Houses of Parliament in London, and the guards found not only the bomb but also Guy Fawkes there. The King’s men cut off his head in the Tower of London. Now English people have a tradition to light fireworks and make bonfires on this day.
